Media Recap Of The Wings 7-6 OT Loss To The New York Islanders

02/10/2018 at 7:06am EST

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

You’re rarely going to see a more bizarre game as this one.

The Red Wings let a potential key victory slip away in strange fashion, 7-6, Friday in overtime to the New York Islanders at the Barclays Center.

But the way they got there was as unusual as you’re going to see.

The Red Wings had compete control and led 5-2, then saw forward Tyler Bertuzzi take a match penalty for slashing at 13 minutes, 27 seconds of the third period.

Amazingly, the Islanders scored four times on Bertuzzi’s five-minute penalty, and took an improbable 6-5 lead with 1:49 left in regulation.

Still reeling, the Red Wings recovered and tied it on Mike Green’s goal with 29 seconds left.

Bertuzzi said he was responding to Clutterbuck’s crosscheck.

“I was skating to the bench and he kind of pushed me,” Bertuzzi said. “It was heat of the moment. I just turned and slashed. I don’t think it deserved a five, but I think it deserved a two-minute penalty.

“It was more or less just sticking up for myself and not taking stuff from anyone. I’m a young guy in the league. It was heat of the moment. I regret it, but at the end of the day, I don’t think it was a five-minute penalty.”

Teammates likewise decried the length of the penalty.

“I was right in front of it,” Anthony Mantha said. “Obviously Clutterbuck tries to crosscheck Bert, Bert turns around and I think the linesman thought it was harder maybe than what it actually was.”

Henrik Zetterberg said “it better be really, really serious if you’re going to call a five-minute on that. That’s a tough call to take even though we probably should have figured out how to kill a little bit better.”
