Kronwall The Mentor

from Dana Wakiji of the Wings' website,

"Definitely ready, and I think it's time for these young guys on D to take another step and get a shot at playing for the team here. Again, it starts with hard work. Have a good camp, but both (Filip) Hronek and (Dennis) Cholowski seem to have really good years. It will be awesome and I very much look forward to watching them play."

Hronek, 20, was named to the AHL's All-Rookie team as he recorded 11 goals, 28 assists and was plus-24 in 67 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Cholowski, 20, made the Western Hockey League All-Star team. Cholowski had 13 goals, 26 assists and was plus-9 in 37 games with the Prince George Cougars.

After being traded to the Portland Winterhawks, he had one goal, 26 assists and was plus-20 in 32 regular-season games. In 12 playoff games with Portland, Cholowski had five goals, two assists and was minus-9....

"I think it's awesome when you have guys coming up," Kronwall said. "And I think obviously with where we are at, we're destined to have some young players, especially on D, taking steps. We've seen (Dylan Larkin), (Anthony Mantha), (Andreas Athanasiou), (Tyler Bertuzzi), we've seen some guys up front, and I think it's definitely time for the back end to also get rejuvenated with some young players."

Yeah, Kronner, it would be great if you and your one-legged drop passin’ butt wasn’t taking up a spot so one of these young guys could get a real chance.

All shitty contact complaints should be directed to Mr. Kenneth Holland.

We would have to move on from at least two defencemen from this year to have a real influx. It appears almost inevitable that Ouellet is traded or buried next year, and if they are serious about getting younger they won’t resign Green. That leaves us 5 D on the team. If they are serious about rebuilding and the kids are ready I would suggest promoting two of Hicketts, Hronek, and Cholowski and run with DeKeyser, Ericsson, Daley and two promotions as everyday defencemen and then alternate Kronwall/Jensen as your 6/7. Kronwall gets to play out his last year, act as a mentor to the young guys, and maintain some health in his knees by not playing every day. This also gets the rebuild going by getting the younger guys some sustained playing time. Won’t be a great defence, but it’s a start. This, of course, is all contingent on us not getting Dahlin.

Jensen has to go. His only improvement this season was that he wasn’t pushed over Jimmy causing him to be injured. Jensen is replaceable and he doesn’t even add veteran leadership. Kroner can then play relief against tougher competition and sit a few games in a row. Sure, it’s hard to be a competitor and asked to play only a 3rd of the season.

I don’t know if I’d call Kronwall’s contracts shitty and bash Holland for it.  It sucks now with his knee, but that’s not something you can know ahead of time, and more importantly we got a lot of lower cap hit value out of Kronwall who was a premium #2 over most of the course of his deal.

Jensen has to go.

Umm why? He’s played a whole 1-1/2 years in the NHL and we’re already done with him? Turn and burn in one of the more difficult positions for a rookie making them jump?  He was decent for a stretches, struggled in stretches, sounds rookie to me, but ok, here’s hoping Hronek and Chow are all stars out of the starting gates, and we don’t dump them, if that’s the standard I can see why Holland wants them overripe before they hit the NHL ice.
