Khan(!)‘s Just Blowing Stuff Up Now

We stopped wondering long ago what motivates our young corps of Deep Diggers.  It’s a mystery.  But I know this.  After a day of speculation and hand wringing?

Ansar Khan(!), our DD Captain, got to work.

Unfortunately, all he may have done is muddy the waters a bit.

Zetterberg would not confirm the status of negotiations on Thursday, but he denied a CBC report that indicated he had spurned a 10-year, $75 million offer from the Red Wings.

“That’s not true,’’ Zetterberg said. “I haven’t turned down an offer of $75 million.’‘

Got it.  Deny. Deny. Deny.

If anything, he likely will sign a deal in the neighborhood of 10 years and $75 million, which would be the longest and most lucrative pact in franchise history.

“That figure really is in the ballpark,’’ said a person with knowledge of the talks.

So, what we’re saying is that Zetterberg hasn’t turned down that ten-year, 75 million offer.  I guess what we’re saying is that he’s damn close to signing that very offer, or something real close?

Well, Khan(!) drops a few hints in there and says talks have “intensified.”  He also threw us this little nugget.

Team captain Nicklas Lidstrom, forward Tomas Holmstrom and club vice-president Steve Yzerman also have had one-on-one meetings with Zetterberg over the last two months in an effort to get him signed.

The things that happen in that room, things we only speculate about and try to guess at.  How do you think that “one-on-one” with Homer went?

Homer: “You signing renewing and using ink for a name with paper?”

Zetterberg: “Jesus Homer”

That one sentence could lead to an entire day of speculation, and I expect it to.  Because that’s, you know, how we roll around here motherf**kers.  But Homer, the Swede and Yzerman have been talking to Zetterberg for two months in an “effort to get him signed”, and he’s still not signed?

Tick. Tock.

Meanwhile, in Sweden…

Courtesy of Snapshots,

January 16, Expressen (roughly translated): “Zäta” on rumour: “Not at all correct”

  A ten-year contract worth 600 million.

Canadian television channel CBC says on its website that Henrik Zetterberg turns down such an offer recently from his club, the Detroit Red Wings.

“It is not true at all, “says Zäta to HockeyExpressen.se after Thursday night’s away game against the Kings in Los Angeles.

Detroit’s club management and Zetterberg’s agent are in negotiations since last fall on a new multi-year contract.

That Zäta will want to have a new annual salary of 7-8 million dollars, which is equivalent to 56-64 million [Swedish Kronor], is no wild guess.

  “Not at all correct”

But yesterday’s report that he declined to a ten-year contract from the Red Wings’ owner is denied by Zäta.

“I have heard about the information, but it is not true.”

Are you close to a solution?

“I can not comment [further] myself. I think nothing happens this week, anyway,” says Zäta.

Can you consider if you want to play ten more years in the NHL, when you’ll be 38 years [old]?

“I do not know, but it is surely not impossible. I can see myself playing for many years to come if I can stay healthy.”

In U.S. dollars, [the contract] would, according to the CBC, [average] about $7.5 million dollars per season, which represents 60 million.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
