Just Terrible News, Cancer Takes The life Of Jamie Samuelsen At Age 48

Jamie recently announced he was fighting colon cancer for over a year.

via Anthony French of the Detroit Free Press,

Jamie Samuelsen, a longtime voice on the Detroit sports media scene, died on Saturday after a lengthy battle with colon cancer. He was 48 years old.

Samuelsen was diagnosed with colon cancer 19 months ago but kept his condition private until last week. Samuelsen died on Saturday tonight.

He is survived by his wife, Christy McDonald, and three children, Caroline, 16; Josh, 14; and Catherine, 11.

Samuelsen spent nearly his entire professional career in the Detroit market, most recently on WXYT co-hosting the “Jamie and Stoney” morning show with Heather Park since 2016. Before that, Samuelsen spent time at WDFN, WRIF and WCSX on the radio, Fox 2 on television and wrote blog posts on Freep.com for over a decade.

Kirkland Crawford of the Detroit Free Press on Jamie a few days ago,

Ultimately, he remains a father. Even as he battles his own health crisis, the well-being and security of his children are at the top of his mind.

And that is why Jamie Samuelsen remained quiet about his battle with cancer, only sharing with family, close friends and co-workers.

To protect his three kids.

"We have a 16-year-old, Caroline, a 14-year-old named Josh and an 11-year-old named Catherine," Samuelsen told the Free Press on Monday. "Obviously, all of our lives were turned upside down when we found out, but we wanted to make their lives as normal as possible. Plus, given the fact that I work in radio and my wife works in TV, I wanted to make sure it didn't affect their lives."

Thinking of the charter WDFN booked for Game 3, SCF in Washington in 1998.

I took my mom on the trip and she was so impressed by Jamie.  Now they meet again.

Sad news, didn’t know the guy personally, but obviously like all of us in Detroit, have listened and watched him discuss sports for a while, feels like you do know him a bit right. Seemed like a nice guy in real life, and by all the comments, he was a nice guy, not old either. RIP.

Let this serve as a public notice to everyone. Get a colon cancer screening. Don’t put it off.
