After a decade in Detroit and two Cups that should have been at least four, Chris Chelios is a Wing no longer.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland met with 47-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios this afternoon and, as expected, told him the club will not offer him a contract for next season, ending the future Hall of Famer’s 10-year career in Detroit.
“He’s been a tremendous Red Wing; we’ve done a lot of winning with him in a Red Wings uniform,’’ Holland said. “He wants to play again. I really think he can help somebody, playing 10-15 minutes, playing in the 5-6 (defense spot), killing penalties, as a mentor and a role model to younger player. That was a part of his legacy in Detroit.’‘
You know where he’s going. I know where he’s going. We’ll see you six times next year Cheli. No doubt the Hawk fans will cheer you just as loudly as they’ve booed you the last decade.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
