...who? If 23 bolts for the big bucks, which blueliner bolsters the back end in Hockeytown? Well, that’s the question, eh? We can certainly expect oft-injured and abrasive Dany Markov to return with the Schneider cash cleared, but there are other options…maybe even in addition to Markov.
Naturally, there’s Souray. But that SOB’s gonna want as much as Schneider, so it’s a wash and it’s silly to think about so just stop. Then you have the ancient blue liners, the same names that seem to crop up every July and stay available until the cash is low and desperation is high: Pratt, Richardson, Poti, Delmore, Klee, De Vries, Niiiiiiiiiinima, Sean Hill, Ozolinsh, McGillis, Berard, Eriksson, Pushor. Nope, no thank you to all.
Too exensive, too old, too often available, too recently in Detroit with little to show.
But there are others. Bryan Rafalski, for instance. A natural PP quarterback who may be tough for the Devils to re-sign, along with Gomez. Would certainly add to the offense Schneider leaves behind. And what about the dirty bastards in Calgary who tried every trick in the book to bruise our innocent Euros in round 1? Hamrlik, Stuart and Ference are all hitting the market. Any would be acceptable if you’re in the mood for a stay-at-home guy rather than the point totals. Stuart would be interesting. Actually, so would Hamrlik.
Woops…how about Darryl Sydor? I love the idea of stealing from Dallas. It just makes me feel warm. However, Sydor’s on the back end of a nice career and will probably be looking for more than he’s worth.
So, all the names above are worthy of your consideration. But there’s one more that makes a little sense: Scott Hannan. Offensively inept, yes. But more than steady staying at home and you have to think the Wings are expecting a healthy (I know, I know) Kronwall and a surging Lebda to pick up the offensive slack IF Schneider goes bye bye.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
