I NOW Consider Petr Mrazek To Be Expendable

01/14/2017 at 6:00pm EST

Actually, you know I've considered him that all year, if not the last couple.

He's not hurt, and it's not a back-to-back. He's not playing because he hasn't proven he's the best goalie on this team.

Shit. He wasn't the best when Howard was healthy, and he may not be the clear number 1 right now with Jared Coreau getting the start against Pittsburgh.

Mrazek makes some fantastic saves, usually in the midst of allowing at least one soft goal, and a couple other tough ones.

He is not consistently strong.

This is not the goalie of the future for this team.

You could easily say that I'm piling on, that I'm finding easy faults with a last-place team. Ok. Except I've said it since day 1. I'd rather have Jimmy Howard in net than Mrazek. Howard doesn't have the flash, but he has the consistency. Unfortunately, Mrazek has proven me right before Tick Tock Kenny Holland could have dealt him. And now that's not a possibility.

No matter how you slice it, a competent GM would assure Petr Mrazek lives in a different area code in March or, more realistically, in July.

Jared Coreau is starting against the Stanley Cup champs tonight, and Petr Mrazek is healthy and rested.

Your Red Wings are in last place and it's a Saturday night. You might want to drink a little, if you have the option and you're old enough.

LGRW and FH.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
