Hockeytown Todd: Injuries And Officiating

11/18/2016 at 6:13pm EST

Gramps was a staple here for a long time. The voice of reason amidst 19 reactionaries. The sage old man who'd seen it all. Todd used to remind us when we got too excited that everything evens out in hockey. One way or another, there will be a makeup call, karma, or just bad luck...the kind he'd seen for nearly four decades before baby Jesus and the Captain brought the Cup back home in 1997.

Of all the wisdom he forced on us, "injuries and officiating" was the common refrain.

If something was going to fell the best team in hockey between '95 and '09 it would have been injuries and officiating.

Now? With a mediocre team, destroyed by the ineptitude of a general manager who is behind the times?

Now, those same injuries cannot be overcome.

You don't lose a Kronwall, a Vanek, an Athanasiou and a Helm and expect to compete.

This team doesn't have the depth to overcome that volume of pain.

And you can thank Ken Holland and his never-ending thirst for mediocrity.

Montreal was...horrific.

Tampa was good, but not good enough.

Washington is most likely better than the former and equal to the latter.

God help us all and drink up.

It's a Live Blog, bitches.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
