GDT - Game #80:  Red Wings at Blues (7:30)

For DET (47-27-5) to recapture 2nd place in the Central from NSH (2-1 SO winners over MIN last night), the Wings are going to have to pull a rabbit out of their hat against STL (48-21-10), and:  (A)  win on the road (where DET are 16-21-3 (22nd), (B) win on the road against the Blues #1 in the league home ice record (30-5-4), and as if that weren’t a tall enough task (C) beat Brian Elliott - Elliott has not allowed a regulation goal in his last three starts, he leads the NHL in save percentage (.943) and goals-against average (1.48) while sitting second in the NHL with nine shutouts.

Elliott has not allowed a regulation goal in his last three starts, he leads the NHL in save percentage (.943) and goals-against average (1.48) while sitting second in the NHL with nine shutouts.

He’s ripe.

I’d rather the Wings be looking at this setup, than a “meaningless” game against the Islanders, or some such.

The games that logic tells us we shouldn’t win are the ones we seem to perform well in.

As a minor change of topic, if you’re interested in a really good book, look up Piece of Cake.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piece_of_Cake_(novel)
It’s about an RAF squadron in early WWII.

Okay…a major change of topic, but one of my favorite books.

the Blues #1 in the league home ice record (30-5-4)

The Wings are 31-6-2 at home.  Both teams have picked up 64 points at home but Detroit has one more win, therefore Detroit has a better home ice record.

Home for the post Easter, playoff holidays is within our grasp, but 3 tough games.  That list of playoff possibilities is still long.

Sharks pretty much ended the Stars season head to head last night and got themselves into the playoffs.  3-7-8 are still up for grabs.  Sharks could easily finish #3.  Barf.

Kings and Coyotes are tied in Games Played, Points, and ROW wins.  Kings are 3rd so must own the third tie-breaker, head to head points.

By moving their last game up to 1 pm from a night game, the Wings have 3 games in 66 hours.  Thanks. Gary. Ass.

Just to view from the dark side, it’s possible Detroit won’t get 1 point in the last 3 games and fail to get to 100 points for the first time this century (?).

And while we’re discussing the way way, distant future, Saturday afternoon, if we’re playing CHI for 5th place I think we would match up better just taking 6th place vs LAK or PHX.  Those would be a lot of traveling again, as would San Jose against whom I don’t think we match up well.  Starting home vs Chicago or Nashville also seems like a challenge for this team the way they’ve been sputtering.  A lot of players need to start playing up to potential or getting past the first round will be a struggle vs anyone.

Would love to see Helm healthy but that still is a ways off.

Why wouldn’t we? I don’t think it really matters who the Wings play next week. It’s go-time. No excuses. Don’t slack against anyone else. It’s time to flip the switch. I’m not secretly hoping they’ll fall to a certain seed or gain a certain seed. They need to get healthy, hopefully pull their heads out of their arses, and start playing. The West is tough…the East is getting tougher. Welcome to Gary, Ass’s Parity. The only thing/team that’ll beat the Wings is themselves as Captain Eeyore said yesterday. If the Wings show up, they’ll win. If they coast, they’ll play golf before May.

Tonight’s game? Meh. Just stay healthy.

My team is in the playoffs and I am looking forward to the 1st round.  Don’t really give a riiiiiiiiiiip who the opponent is. That being said, the less travel the better in my book. When the Wings want to skate with a team, they win. The playoffs bring clarity of focus to the Wings. Chemistry comes with focus on purpose. Everybody is trending more healthy than not, and that is a definite positive.

Say hello to my Eeyore, from CBC.ca:

The Red Wings have lost seven straight road games (0-5-2 record) by a combined score of 24-11. The last time Detroit won on the road was over five weeks ago (5-2 in Columbus on February 28).

11/7= a whopping 1.57 G/G

Maybe a ray of hope:

Detroit is 16-6-2 (.708) when getting 2+ days off between games this season.

Upcoming milestones:

Nicklas Lidstrom (264 goals) needs 1 goal to tie John Ogrodnick (265) at eighth place on Detroit’s all time list.

Tonight will be Henrik Zetterberg’s 666th career NHL regular season game, all as a Wing.

Johan Franzen needs three goals to get to 150 on his career.  This would put him 24th all-time on the Wings, one behind Bruce MacGregor.
