GDT - Game #68:  Red Wings host Kings (7:30)

DET (43-21-3) have 15 games remaining and find themselves 4 points behind Central leading STL, who won again last night against ANA, 3-2 .  Tonight"s game against LAK (31-24-12) is the Wings game in hand on STL.  Obviously then, it is the proverbial “must win” if DET hope to have any realistic chance of catching the Blues - and avoiding a first round 4-5 series. The Wings will again be short handed, none of the injured are slated to return for tonight’s game.

The Kings are in more dire straights.  They currently sit in 9th spot, but only 1 point out of 8th.  They dropped a 3-1 decision to the BJ’s last night in Columbus - a game in which they were, reportedly, badly outplayed.

Of course, if tonight’s game is a special teams battle, DET could remedy the Kings play.  Facepalm.

Khan(!) has the injury update:

Datsyuk and Lidstrom won’t play this weekend, Friday at home vs. Los Angeles and Saturday at Nashville, but both expect to return at some point during the three-game trip to California that starts Tuesday in Los Angeles. . .

Todd Bertuzzi (strained groin), defenseman Jakub Kindl (upper body) and goaltender Jimmy Howard (strained groin) did not skate and will not play Friday. They’re likely out Saturday, too. But coach Mike Babcock said they are close to returning. . .

The Red Wings recalled forward Gustav Nyquist from the Grand Rapids Griffins. He’ll be in the lineup Friday, Babcock said, on a line with Justin Abdelkader and Danny Cleary.

Henrik Zetterberg did not skate today but Babcock said he will play Friday.

Geez, let’s hope it’s not a “facepalm” night.

Glad to see Gus in the lineup.  Kid can score.

(Won’t be in the LB tonight as I’ll be watching the game later.)

Ok, I don’t want to press the panic button yet, but looking at the way St Louis and Nashville are playing + are stats of back to back game + are lack of energy in the first period…has me worried….just a little..

Of bigger concern than the PP is the medical state of key players.  For if they do not return we really have little chance of winning much of anything and may slide down to 5th or worse.

I agree with letting them get healthy at this point of the season and not risking further aggravation just 30 days from the playoffs, but it is disconcerting when a “bruise” turns into something lasting multiple weeks.  Groin problems?  Can go on endlessly and keep recurring.

RSV.

Not really. 14 games ago, the Wings had a 3 point lead on the Blues and they realistically made up 7.

Injuries are by far the most worrisome considering the PP has been crap since like November with all players available.  Not much has changed there minus the tendency to give up shorties which is maddening.

Shorthanded goals used to be like eclipses, you see one every few years but lately I’ve been expecting it.

Haven’t looked at the lines because I don’t want to be reminded of the missing, but Okie said Nyquist will be with Cleary and Abdelkader?  Maybe he can get a tour with Z or Fil sometime.

I looked at the lines before last game and remarked “don’t see a lot of goals in there”.  I wouldn’t mind starting to drink at 9 a.m. but I’m at work and my special drawer is empty.

Don’t know for sure, but hasn’t the PP given up more goals than it has scored lately?  That’s pretty awesome.  If major players return and populate the PP units I’m confident that will cease.

True, that.

I seem to recall something Holland said in the past (my memory isn’t what it once was), about getting off to a good start early in the season, it went something like this:

If you are playing well, you can only realistically expect to gain two points on teams in front of you every ten game span.

Also Z is the king of ’ did not skate but will still play’, nice to see Gustav again, really like his game.

Z has chronic back issues that the training staff are very careful with.

I expect when his back is acting up he gets a massage early and tries to avoid doing anything strenous that would make the muscles tighten back up.  And, hey, if the massage ends happily, he may just need a nap.

Honestly do not have any expectations tonight.  This lineup is so beaten and battered.  Yes, it does give us a great glimpse at the next generation of future stars in the farm and I’m thrilled for it but I’d want us to get out of this friggin’ spiral.

Just give us an honest, hard-working effort tonight, Grif-Wings.

Looking at the current standings:  I’m ok with matching up with Nashville.  The Wings have had their number for years, it’s not a lot of travel.  No West Coast games, and a beatable team AND most importantly their goalie will be coming off an injury.

I’m hoping the Sharks don’t make the SCPOs, but I’m also ok with them being a 7 or 8.  They’ll still be a tough out for Vancouver or St Louis.

The 2nd round matchup doesn’t matter that much, as after the 1st round their are no easy outs.
