GDT - Game #48:  Red Wings host Blue Jackets (7:00)

DET (31-15-1) has won each of its last 15 home games, tied for the fifth-longest single-season home winning streak in NHL history, it is the longest home win streak in the NHL since 1976.  Jimmy F’n Howard has started each of those 15 home games, and has posted an obscene 1.39 GAA, .947 save percentage and four shutouts in that run.  Alas, the Wings powerplay has spiraled from whiskey laden to crack whores, a paltry 3 for 41 (7%) over its last 16 games.  Uncle Mike is none too happy:  “We’re not getting quality chances.  We’re not wearing anybody out. Our power play wasn’t good enough tonight. It hasn’t been good enough in a long time and we’ve got to fix that.”

Fortunately for the Wings, the Blue Jackets (5-15-2) are the worst penalty killing team in the Western Conference at 76.8 percent.  The BJ’s also have the worst record in the league, the third worst scoring 2.33 G/G, and the second worst defense 3.22 GA/G.

Easy win tonight, right?  LGRW

Central Division Standings:

1 CHI 48 29 13 6 64 +23
2 DET 47 31 15 1 63 +45

4 NSH 47 27 16 4 58 +5
5 CBJ 46 13 28 5 31 -42

For as good as DET play at JLA (18-2-1), STL (20-3-3) and CHI (19-5-4) have excellent home ice records too.

There is a good chance that the losers of the Central Division race for 1st will meet up in the first round 4-5 matchup.  Winning the Central will be huge.

Fortunately for DET, they have 20 tilts left at home.  STL have only 15 home games left, and CHI have only 13 left.

It’s a Trap!

Thanks for doing the research for me Jeff.  Me trying to think at this time of morning would be, say this is awfully early in the middle of the continent, isn’t it?

Playing the team with the worst record in the league, this one has a loss written all over it.

Yea, a should win is always scary.  A clean win in regulation would be very nice.

Indeed, but being a Wings fan I am likely to say that about every game.  But this time I really mean it.

Yes.

Don’t get me wrong, I really like our team this year, and am damn proud of the current home winning streak; but games against bottom-dwellers scare the Bettman out of me…

Wait…don’t take that the wrong way.

I like that move. Grit against a team that can only win with sandpaper hockey.
