GDT - Game 4:  Red Wings (1-2) host Wild (2-1)  7:30

Detroyet fans fear not, your Coach said:  "We're a team in flux right now. But, we're going to be better. We'll be just fine.''  Shockingly, the reasons for Babock's optimism escape me.

The Wings cannot score, 1.33 G/G (28) and cannot keep the puck out of their net 3.67 GA/G (26).  Special teams are a freaking disaster.  0-15 on the PP, which only occasionally looks dangerous.  More often than not the PP is a life sucking momentum killer - - and the opponents PK has better chances (DET have allowed a short-hander).  The PP is bad, but the PK has been equally awful.  DET have allowed 11 GA, 6 on the opponents PP.  The Wing have only allowed 4 Even-Strength and 1 SH goal (5 GA that go toward +/-).

Of course, our new whipping boy - Q,  has had a hand in 4 of those.  Someone tell me again why he remains on the 2nd "D" pair?

As I’m not a part of the real 19, I rarely post here and am usually just a lurker (or stalker whichever is creepier) but like the ms said, thanks for these. This and the live blog post always get me anticipating the game, even if that anticipation is filled with fear of which shape pylon Q will be tonight.

Considering that most of us refer to each other as imaginary friends, that would make all or the 19 not real. If you are here, then, you are as real as the rest of the 19.

Which makes you one of us, if you’re willing. Judging by your post you have all of the prerequisites (lurking, creepy, most importantly, anticipation is filled with fear).

Welcome aboard.

Thanks OAkie.

Here is what I know aboot tonights game. Imma show up for the LiveBlog and have fun whether we win by 5 or lay another steaming loaf at center ice.

It still give me a thrill to see those Winged Wheel sweaters hit the ice. I am just hoping the thrill doesn’t evaporate 5 minutes after puck drop.

Welcome to the Asylum. Please keep all body parts under careful supervision (yours or someone else’s, doesn’t really matter), avoid the vomit and /or urine-encrusted areas (or not, if that’s your thing), and have a pleasant stay.

Unfortunately, I have a feeling Queasy will still take the shape of a pylon, albeit one with a mounted Phalanx CIWS to shoot his teammates with.

Because there are 2-3 other D-men in which Uncle Mike has even less confidence? I’m hoping Q gets promoted to the top pair.

The Wings are in 23rd place. That is not good enough. They have to suck more to have decent odds at Seth Jones. If the season of Suck For Seth is to be a success, those brilliant stats that you cited need to stop translating into points in the standings. The Wings are 28th in G/G and tied for last in PP%, yet seven teams are ahead of them in the Suck for Seth Sweepstakes. C’mon Boys! Suck it up and suck more.

Thanks for the GDT’s Okie. I hadn’t realized how much I missed them.

Great, they can get Seth Jones and have him play in GR for 7 years.  Good reason to tank a season.

why is Tootoo on the 4th line?  he’s one of the few Wings who is actually busting his ass every shift.

it sure seems like Babcock decides on lines based on reputation, not current performance, and I hate it.  not playing well?  someone else playing better? you lose your spot, they get it.

Bowman understood this and used it wisely.  maybe Babcock needs a phone call from the master.

Posted by Garth on 01/25/13 at 01:16 PM ET

Hey genius, every one knows why the Wings were eliminated in the playoffs in the first round last year, TALENT. The Wings have gone from perenial Cup contender to not even having home ice in the first round. In the last two seasons they have lost Rafalski, Stuart, and Lidstrom. Who have replaced those 3 (2 sure-fire HOF) defensemen? Cocacola, Huskins, Kindl, Quincy and Smith. Only one of those has the talent to be on a #1 D pair. It’s enough to make you miss Meech and Lebda. Kenny and the Brain Trust kept the effects of the salary cap at bay for 7 years, but now it is time to pay the piper for a future return to glory.

Vlady and Lidas did not spend 7 years in GR, neither would Seth Jones. It’s freaking ignorant to suggest that he would.

I’m sure Garth was just using exaggeration for effect, making the point that the Wings do in fact seem to keep players in GR much longer than they should.

My sentiments exactly.

As I got depressed last night reading a piece in the most recent Hockey News, in which the decline of the Wings was not only seen as a foregone conclusion, but also seen as a decline that will last years, I had to remind myself that, even if it holds to be true, that doesn’t negate the fact we were able to witness one of the most successful and dominant teams in any sport over the last two decades.

It’s been a thrill to follow this team, and I will continue to follow them, and, as Dogie says, enjoy every minute those beautiful red and white sweaters take to the ice.

My team, always my team.

+19. A freakin MEN.

In a salary cap league, every team will have to go into the draft lottery for a few years every decade. There simply isn’t the depth of hockey talent worldwide for the teams in the playoffs to be able to keep their cupboards full. There will always be a low pick gem here or there that develops, but teams can’t count on drafting enough of those gems to produce a Cup Champion. I have faith in the Wings brain trust that they are better than almost all teams at recognizing talent in the later rounds. Combine that with a few years in the draft lottery and the Wings will be back contending for the Cup before Obama’s successor is sworn in.

What concerns me is whether or not the Wings are developing the next generation of scouts. Hakan Anderson won’t be around forever and we need as many scouts with his talents as possible.

Q. Can’t live with him. Can’t take him out back and shoot him. Lebda was not as bad as Q. Is Lilja still around?

I would think Mule would have some trade value. I think all he really needs is a new zip code, preferably in the Eastern Conf. His contract was front loaded, so the amount of salary a new team would take on would not be too excessive.

Do any of you cap geeks know if Mule’s current cap number goes with him, or would his new team figure out a new cap number based on what remains of his contract from when they start paying him?

Damn you and your legal logic.

Let’s hope we can be one of those scrappy teams that overachieves, but that will take more cohesive play than they’ve shown.  It is only the fourth game but if you’re a Red Wing fan, or seemingly a fan of any Detroit team, it’s never to early to panic.

That just delays the inevitable, or worse yet, mires the Wings in low-seed, early-playoff-exit mediocrity. (Which is kind of where they have been the last 3 seasons.)

Embrace the season(s) of suck. Think of it like the Polar Bear club; embracing winter with a jump into Lake St. Claire in January means Spring is just around the corner. The worse they are, the better odds they have a drafting the best talent.
