Does Detroit Deserve Alexis Lafreniere?

from ESPN,

It's never too early to start thinking about the 2020 draft. Which team deserves Alexis Lafreniere the most?

Kaplan: The Red Wings sure could use top-end talent to accelerate the rebuild. But do you know what team I'd like to see land Lafreniere? The Minnesota Wild. Bill Guerin has been patient inheriting a roster constructed by two previous GMs....

Peters: I don't know that any team deserves rewards for being so terrible, but the Detroit Red Wings need Lafreniere or Quinton Byfield -- or basically anyone -- right now....

Filipovic: It's the Detroit Red Wings. They've been outscored 131-72 this season. They've held a lead in just 15.3% of their time on the ice....

more from each of the above plus one responder does not mention Detroit...

I really don’t know that Lafreniere even helps this team much.

DET needs a goalie or a defenseman.  Do you take a chance on Askarov?  Maybe.  I’m not sold on anyone else in the system at this point.

But you take a look at a night like last night:  even though DET won, their defense is still so porous and still struggle so mightily to start the play out of their own zone (and then to enter the opponent zone of course).  So many needs on that back end still… you can’t keep trotting out Daley and Ericsson and Green and so forth.  And the way Yzerman has cast off young defensemen is… well, alarming.  He apparently didn’t believe in any of them he’s gotten rid of, and you wonder if he’s done dealing them off.

If DET gets a top 2 pick this time around, I’d seriously shop it around for a d-man.  I don’t know that another young forward helps this team in any meaningful way.

Totally agree that’s it bites a little bit to perhaps be
on course for the highest pick in forever in a year the
best players are at the least impactful position.

And it’s a little annoying to read commentators saying
no one deserves a top pick for being bad….after some
of the richly-rewarded abject tank-jobs we’ve seen in the past
several years. Um, yeah. I kind of think after trying so hard to win
for so long (even after it wasn’t realistic) and always picking low,
Detroit of all teams might deserve it.

It is definitely interesting to see whom Yzerman has judged
not to be fit or part of the future. I’m counting Kaski, Saarijarvi,
and Regula. Though Kaski may have been signed after Stevie took over
it was a recruitment and signing that had been in the works well before.

Re: D in this draft, I don’t know how much of a reach it would be to pick at D
in say the top three. And things can change in terms of players’ stock of course.
But yeah we desperately need a top goalie prospect and a first pairing, offensively dynamic D. If Byfield projects as a true center at the NHL level maybe that’s the direction you’d go.

Get the first overall pick and trade for a D-man

I’m still hoping for Byfield. Any 17-year-old who’s 6’4” and 214lbs and can skate and score the way he does could be a game-changer, especially with wingers like Fabbri and/or Zadina, and hopefully Svechnikov, Mastrosimone, and/or Hirose someday.

I’m still hoping for Byfield

I am with you on this. From what I am reading he is projected to be the next Malkin and centers are more important than wingers.

Ryan Lambert of Yahoo when asked about the Wings…

The Red Wings are currently on pace to be worse in the standings than that 48-point Avalanche team from a few years ago, and worse in terms of just awful, unwatchable play than the tank Sabres.

The “how” is that Ken Holland, now running McDavid and Draisaitl’s team, saddled the Wings with so many bad, long-term, untradeable contracts for guys who were either low-impact players or already outside their primes and getting older all the time. It’s no mystery. The guy believed his own team’s BS, plain and simple.

There’s almost no difference-making talent on the roster because they really only started the rebuild in earnest a year or two ago; it should have been more like “the day Lidstrom retired.” But hey, they had a playoff streak to pursue until they couldn’t anymore. I get it but also: I do not get it.

In today’s era, the generational talents are often picked in the top 3.  Sure there’s the player here are there, Kurcherov Pavel, etc.  but the kids who are later going to be on the cover of NHL 2027, are usually #1 or 2 overall picks.

This team is so far away from true contention, you take “need” and toss that junk right out the window, and you pick a kid that can cornerstone this franchise for the next decade whether he’s a center, winger, dman or goalie, you take the best prospect available.

Outside of the top 5, need can come into the equation a tiny bit and more gradual as you slide down the order.

And I’m gonna stop reading right there, Lambert is nothing but a rectangular object in which a man would place his tool into.

DET needs two goalies and 3 or 4 defenseman

And im in for Byfield.  He has that size/hands combo, and I dont put as much stock in high point totals when they come from the Q.

Pick the best available player.  This Rebuild is going to take a long time.  I also realize that Father Time is going to start making the Larkins etc closing in on 30’s.

The cupboards are empty at most positions.  It would be nice to keep all draft picks.  Big Center??  Is Ras done?  Most GMs use their high 1st round pick on the best player available.

Wings don’t need another KH Gong show.

Trades might make the rebuild take less time but cost Big $$.

Some pretty notable players (F) have com from the Q..  Big stay at home D from WHL.  OHL has the best players at each position depending.

AS you get farther down the 1st Rd , everything and anything can happen.
