Teams with “captains” like Joe Thornton do not win Game 7’s after blowing a 3-0 lead. Those victories are reserved for men.
Leaders don’t target an injured ankle, slash it, then dive like Rosby in a musical. Men store that shit away and discuss it amongst themselves on long plane rides between midwestern blue collar cities and places like San Jose.
Twenty consecutive years of playoff appearances, highlighted by four Stanley Cups and more “moments” than any franchise on earth. “Moments” like Kirk Maltby losing his stick, then blocking two more shots to kill a penalty while Chris Pronger sobs in frustration.
As opposed to twenty years of existence with an established tradition of losing at the worst possible time. And that’s just too bad. You did it to yourselves when you littered your ranks with the likes of Roenick, Ron Wilson and Joe Thornton.
And here’s something else: Wings win tonite and they become the favorites. I mean, THE favorites. The favorites to beat Vancouver, the favorites to win the whole damn thing. San Jose wins and nobody with a brain cell picks them to go any further than five or six games against the Canucks.
This is the game the Wings earned and it’s the game they’ve pined for. It’s the game San Jose has had nightmares about and regretted since Day 1. The choking label has been whispered and joked about. But after tonite, it’s a headliner.
And for the Wings, it’s just another chapter. They were built for this, mentally conditioned for it.
It’s a Live Blog, bitches.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
