Do You Want Dan Boyle?

Dan Boyle will not be returning to the San Jose Sharks next season.

Report is the Sharks offered discussed with him a one year deal but Boyle is looking for at least two years.

He is 37 years old, shoots right and made almost $6.7K last year.

If you do want to sign him, what would you pay him for the two years?

HELL YES. for like.. 5mil a year for 2 years. That’s all though.

So Red wings do this.. Somehow land Niskanen, sign Boyle. Sign Vanek, sell a few prospects of course, rid the dead weight and trade Franzen. we have a cup contending team maybe. smile Vanek is the Franzen that actually scores consistently.

let’s be fair: Boyle is still an effective defenseman and his salary would be fine if he could be a mentor on a team with a young, inexperienced defensive core. Hmmmmm? which team would fall into that category Red Wings fans?

The positives…

Right-handed shot, will play on the pp.
Smart, good outlet pass.
Experience counts.

Negatives…

Small.
Tends to turn over the puck at times.

Here is his injury history.

As a Sens fan, I’d be very interested. For all the talk that we missed Alfie this year (and we did), Gonchar’s veteran presence was also badly missed. Our D group could use a veteran to stabilize things a bit.

He’s from Ottawa and lives in the area in the offseason, so perhaps he might be willing to give a bit of a hometown discount. I’d go 2 years, $8 million

No, I don’t think so. Time to move forward.

I can see him as a stop-gap defensemen that helps now and doesn’t block any of the prospects knocking on the door.

He provides great puck movement out of the zone, which this team has severely lacked since Nick and Rafalski left town.

I’d be OK with this if it is the lesser of two moves on defense. I still need a major upgrade back there to make me happy.

Holy crap!  I’ll pay his $6700 salary myself if that’s all it takes raspberry

Boyle has never been an effective defensemen.  He has, however, been very effective in the past offensively as a rover.  Unfortunately his offense is on the decline because his mobility is also on the decline.  And, as a mentor, I think Smith has enough bad habits without Boyle showing him how to totally sherk his defensive responsibilities.

Not saying that there are many alternatives on the market, but i dont feel hes the type Detroit needs.

With Ouelett, Marchenk and Sproul all about a year away from a full-time spot, I’d take Boyle for two years over Niskanen for five (or more). Let Quincey walk and trade Kindl for a bag of pucks (or a third/fourth round pick).

Then you’d have:
• Kronwall - Ericsson
• Dekeyser - Smith
• Boyle - Lashoff/Almquist

If Almquist can’t cut it, waive or trade him and call up one of the kids. The others would take turns getting called up as injury replacements. By the end of the year, the Wings should have a pretty good idea of who they can count on moving forward.

I’d rather the Wings pay Boyle $4-5 mil/per for 2 years than pay Niskanen $6-7 mil/per for 6-8 years.

Don’t sleep on Boyle to the Leafs.

His ties to Claude Loiselle (VP and Assistant GM) date back to TBay when Claude was in the same role.

Here’s a link to a conference call Boyle had with the Bay Area media this morning:

LOLZ, guys.  Thanks for playing but we all know that, since Boyle is 37, he’s getting a 5yr-$40mil contract from the Flyers.

No *#$%@& way.

Maybe five years ago, but not at 37, especially if he’s asking for multiple years.

Yeah, why pay a good young player in his prime when you can pay an old guy who is declining?

It’s okay, Garth… I was totally kidding.  That move does not seem like a Sexy Hexy kind of deal.

I wasn’t specifically responding to you, Boyle seems to want multiple years.  That should be a deal breaker.

Yes but only for 4-5 mil per year

No.  I do not want Dan Boyle on the Red Wings.

The Red Wings do not need a 37 year-old Brendan Smith on their blue line.

As Hootinani states, Boyle has never been very good in his own end and relied heavily upon offensive gambling and skating to make up for it.  And now, he’s 37 and his skills are slipping.  So basically, remove half of his upside.

Do.  Not.  Want.

Boyle was -8 with 36 points (18 on the PP) this year in 75 games with a pretty good Sharks team (in the reg season, anyway). Not impressive by any stretch.

Definitely not worth 5-6 million in my mind.  Only Lidstrom was worth that at that age.

I would want him for 4.5 2 year contract. Plus the Sharts owe us a trade for him and a bag of pucks like we did for them with Stuie a couple of years ago. Rafalski and Boyle could teach Almquist and the other young d-men how the efficiently use the transition up the ice creating more scoring chances and help with the sorry ass pp.
