Abel to Yzerman

Do you know the way…

... to the Eastern Conference? It seems like the NHL's "Top Men" have done their best to make the Wings think they're still in the West.

At least this time they've come to us - and that's a good thing, right? What's that? The Sharks are 7-0-1, with a +23 goal differential? They're 9-2-1 vs. the Wings in the last 12 games? There's only TWO defensemen playing for Detroit tonight that have more than a half-season of NHL hockey under their belts?

Well, at least Tatar's getting into the game, and NHL's The Wheel of Justice gave Cody McLeod 5 games for trying to pop Kronner's head like a zit on prom night... that's... well, that's something to be hap... yeah, I can't even get excited over that. This will likely be a massacre, and Cleary will still play "realgud" regardless of how many times he trips over the his own feet.

This is RedMenace filling in for The Master Chief... hide the pets and pepper your angus. It's a Live Blog, bitches.

65:00 shutout minutes against the Sharks with that D?  Pretty well earned point.

A game the the Wings needed to show some defensive responsibility and let the Youngins get some confidence against a league leading team.
G’day 19. See ya Wednesday.

That was, in a lot of ways a terrible hockey game to watch.  Not even purely because of score, but both teams were clogging shooting lanes with so many sticks that everything was going to be ugly.  This was a playoff game minus the playoff atmosphere and tension honestly.  Which isn’t the best thing you can say about a game.

I hated the Tatar line.  I *liked* in the 3rd at that one point when Tatar seemed to say “You know what, f*** this” and just took over for about :20 himself, starting in his own end and culminating in a scoring chance for him at the other, including a great play by him at center ice.  Guy’s “compete level” is real.

I really am unsure if Franzen at center “worked”.  I’m sure the Franzen haters will say “Of course it didn’t, the word ‘work’ is in there!  Derp derp…” but he did OK I guess,  It was interesting seeing him in a position to create, and he did so for behind the net on that Alfredsson chance.  Overall DET came away with 0 goals and not a ton of good scoring chances.

I hate how Babcock juggled the lines again.  It didn’t work.  I feel really sorry for Weiss.  At this point I don’t know HOW he’s supposed to get going or more settled, when his linemates change every game.

I’m sure some of you are getting tired of me saying it but… Z needs to STOP with the entering the zone and driving wide of the net to go behind.  Teams aren’t even threatened that he’ll cut back now and simply take away behind the net, and he’s stopped.  He needs to stop trying that and do something else, it’s not working.

Defensively… *shrug*.  Guys had their moments of good, guys had their moments of bad.  Dekeyser was good all game, but the rest… it was hit and miss at times.  Quincey made a couple of great plays I thought in his own zone.  Even Smith did some things better.  If he shoots an inch or so right on that delayed penalty it’s 1-0 and he’s maybe the hero of the game.

All in all a weird game.  Don’t feel TOO good about the point, but don’t feel bad either.  It just…. is.  I mean, if Niemi doesn’t make that ridiculous stop of Bertuzzi in the SO, DET might have somehow come away with another point, and 2 pts might feel better i guess.  I guess that’s what you get from a “Let’s take the top d-man off of each team for the game, and then another key player from each!!!!” tilt.

*sigh*  I miss Brad Stuart.
