from Arpon Basu of The Athletic,
The other significant game is also Thursday when the Canadiens visit Detroit. If the Red Wings manage to win at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, this game will lose much significance for them because they’ll essentially be locked in to the 26th spot and might even risk moving higher in the standings with the Edmonton Oilers and New York Islanders not too far ahead of them. That would also make Detroit’s season finale against the Islanders very interesting. But if they lose in Columbus, the Red Wings would have some interest in losing to the Canadiens as well because that would leave the teams one point apart in the standings, assuming Montreal loses to the Winnipeg Jets at home on Tuesday. If the Canadiens win against the Jets, playing a back-to-back, that game Thursday in Detroit becomes even more important.
