Detroit Red Wings/Winnipeg Jets Preview And Notes

02/14/2015 at 10:12am EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Winnipeg Jets altered their roster slightly with a blockbuster trade on Wednesday but they maintain what Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock considers the ideal right-lefty balance on defense.

"When you look at the group they have on the back, they really built a back end and if you know their prospects they got lots coming," Babcock said. "I've known Chevy (Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff) a long time; he's a smart guy and they're going about it with good patience. Suddenly, they have maybe the best right-handed back end in hockey. So they've done a real good job there and no question they're deep."

VALENTINE’S DAY

Detroit is 18-13-5 all-time on Valentine’s Day, with wins in seven of their last nine games on Feb. 14 (7-2-0). The team’s last two Valentine’s Day games game against the Dallas Stars, both resulting in 3-1 wins (most recently in 2012 at home, and prior to that in 2007 with a 3-1 road win). The Red Wings were not always successful on this day, going winless in their first seven Valentine’s Day games (0-4-3). Detroit’s first Valentine’s Day game was a 1-1 tie against the New York Americans in 1929, and they earned their first win over the Chicago Blackhawks (2-1) in 1941.

THIS DATE IN RED WINGS HISTORY

Feb. 14, 2012 – Detroit’s 3-1 win over Dallas establishes a new NHL record for consecutive home wins, earning their 21st in a row.
Feb. 14, 1974 – The Red Wings trade Ace Bailey, Ted Harris and Bill Collins to St. Louis in exchange for Bryan Watson, Jean Hamel and Chris Evans.

WINNIPEG JETS

GAME PREVIEW

As of Feb. 13, both of the Winnipeg Jets (28-19-10) and Detroit Red Wings (31-13-9) held the fifth-best record in their respective conferences. Where their place in the standings differs is Detroit finds themselves three points back of the Atlantic Division leader, while the Jets trail the Central’s top team – the Nashville Predators – by 14 points. Winnipeg lost 3-1 to Nashville in the first game of their current two-game road trip that ends in Detroit on Saturday. The Jets saw Detroit once before this season on Nov. 20 when the visiting Red Wings won 4-3 in regulation at MTS Centre. Mathieu Perreault led the Jets with two points (1G, 1A) in the contest, while Detroit’s Tomas Tatr (2G) & Justin Abdelkader (1G, 1A) also had multipoint games.
TEAM NOTES

Rarely seen opponent

The Jets will be spending Valentine’s Day in Detroit with a bunch of virtual strangers. That said because the Jets have faced the Red Wings fewer than any other NHL team since the start of the 2011-12 season. The Jets and Red Wings have clashed four times in four seasons, with each team earning two wins between them. The two teams that the Jets have faced the fewest times are the Columbus Blue Jackets (5) & Detroit Red Wings (4), which is because they are the teams that changed conferences, along with Winnipeg, during the NHL realignment in 2013.

Eating up the East

The Jets have a record of 13-6-4 versus the opposite conference this season. Among Western Conference teams, Winnipeg is third in points against the East with 30. Only the St. Louis Blues (34) & Vancouver Canucks (31) have more points against the Eastern Conference. The Jets have earned a record of 6-3-1 against the Red Wings’ Atlantic Division this season. Detroit has a record of 7-0-1 against the Central Division.
