Cholowski, the club's top pick in 2016 (20th overall) will be among four defensemen competing for possibly one NHL roster spot. Filip Hronek, coming off a strong rookie season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, has the inside track. Joe Hicketts, who appeared in five games with the Red Wings last season, and Libor Sulak, who is 24 and has played four years in Europe, also are in the mix.
Red Wings director of player development Shawn Horcoff praised the 6-1, 195-pound Cholowski's work ethic and determination during last week's development camp at Little Caesars Arena.
"He really put the work in last summer and obviously improved in the season," Horcoff said. "His weight is up; his strength is up. It's still early in the summer and there's lot of work to be done, but he looks good as of now."
