Dead Last

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

As losses mount for the Detroit Red Wings, so do their chances of finishing with the best odds to win the NHL Draft Lottery and land a top prospect like Alexis Lafreniere or Quinton Byfield.

The Red Wings took some solace Saturday in competing hard against the top team in the league, the Washington Capitals, but they still suffered their ninth consecutive loss, 5-2 at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings (7-19-3) are last in goals per game (2.14) and goals-against per game (3.93). Their special teams have been dismal – 26th on the power play, last on the penalty kill.

They’re last overall with 17 points, and the gap is getting wider. They are five points behind the next-worst teams, New Jersey and Los Angeles, and they have played more games than those clubs and most of the league.

Coach Jeff Blashill, whose team is 0-7-2 in its past nine and has dropped seven in a row in regulation, was asked how they can prevent this from snowballing.

“It’s snowballed already a bit,” Blashill said. “We have to focus on the reality of how you play. The first period in Philly (Friday), we were excellent, through the second we were pretty good until boom, boom, boom, you get scored on. But we did lots of positive things there. Tonight, we did lots of positive things, the game against Carolina (Sunday) we did lots of positive things. The game against Toronto (Wednesday) was terrible.

“Our job as a coaching staff is to make sure that you fight through the emotion of it. You tell them what they’re doing right and what they’re doing wrong so they can get better.”

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
