Coming To Terms With A Couple Of Steel Firms

It's not submission.  We're not Blues fans, for god's sake.  It's short-term acceptance.   For a very brief period of time we've come to understand that this franchise's singular goal is to extend the playoff streak.  That's organizationally.  They're thinking of nothing else. They expect nothing other than just getting in.

It's why Pittsburgh landed two captains, both better than the one they already had.  Minnesota improved. Columbus did and so did Boston.  The Diggers hint that we kicked Jagr's tire but not hard enough.  We're also reminded that the Wings committed to a youth movement when injuries hit us in February?  Ok.

I call it giving up.  But that's just my isolated opinion, I'm sure.

But only for a short period of time, and only in the eyes of Holland and his team of equal-voiced advisors.  Here's why we have legitimate reason for hope:

There is no way Henrik Zetterberg views this as a gloss-over year.  There is no way that a competitive athlete can be this close to the playoffs, and therefore the Cup, and view this postseason as a nice-to-be-here deal.

But it's not Hank we worry about.  Or Datsyuk. It's not Kronwall or Howard or even the young defense.  It's not Nyquist or whoever else Uncle Mike puts in there on any given night.

Three things must happen if this team is going to go all UM on us and "shock the world", and it would be a horrific shock to those who despise us, wouldn't it?

Franzen must be the guy we used to know.  Actually, we never really knew him.  He is the guy we know now because the guy we want him to be has only been around for rare glimpses, but thankfully those glimpses were enough for Tick Tock to ensure the guy we do know will be around for a long, long time.  Who has the ability to get under his skin, like Yzerman got under Fedorov's? Like Bowman got under Shanahan's? Putting him at center, telling him to "choose a line" and then "dominate"?  That's not going to cut it.  The most frustrating Wing of our time, without question.

Filppula.  Does he realize that if he actually performs for the next two months he can write his own ticket?  If Wally plays even close to his potential he could be looking at an epic payday in June or July or whenever Gary decides to let teams other than us sign free agents this summer.  I'm tired of him and I'm anxious to see him go, but I wouldn't mind an explosion of talent that carries us where few outside of the 19 of us really want us to go.

Helm.  Poor, sweet, innocent Darren by god Helm.  I'm telling you right now that if we get Helm back healthy and if those two fuchtards I mentioned above can play the way baby jesus wants them to? We have a shot.  If we don't get two out of those three? Done like dinner after one just like Kenny and the rationalizers expect and accept.

The three paragraphs above, plus the one sentence that preceded comprise the most obvious thoughts a Wing fan has ever typed. I get that. But it doesn't make them any less critical.  Mule, Wally and God.  We roll with them, or go out whimpering awash in flagellation and excuses from Kenny and his posse.

It's a Live Blog, you bitches.   I once called the Blues the best team in the Western Conference. Now I just call them the 8 seed, if they're lucky...just like the not so distant good old days.

That delay of the game rule is the stupidest. I can see it in the goal crease but not behind the net.
Lets make this playoffs run more challenging.  The poor Hasek is looking pretty bad with all the copious bodily fluids .

Cal if we got together and wrote a book of EMS Detroit stories,  they would put us in the looney bin and throw away the key. I still.can’t believe all the things that went on there.

Will miss the live blog Thursday playing a beer league playoff game. Will catch up later.

by the way, who the hell is DEL KEYSER? hmmm?

Still cant understand how Hank got a penalty for Perron holding his stick and not letting him go, then giving him the face wash muggin’. I don’t get that at all.

Or the almost two minutes of 5 on 3 that should have happened in our favor, if the refs had decided to call too many men on the ice against STL? Apparently when you’re playing the Wings that isn’t a penalty.

Just watched the game, what the fuch were the refs watching that whole damn game?  I haven’t been this pissed off after a wings game in a long time.

10 DAL 38 18 17 3 39

The optimist says DET can get in, and playing CHI means easy travel.  Stupid optimist.

Overview of the entire Western Conference.  Midget would probably really be pissed if the team flying way above everyone was Detroit.

You don’t have to run faster than the grizzly bear, only faster than your camping buddy.

Way back about the first POS this year I said this year’s 9th place team looked like it would be lower than any other 9th recently.  You only have to finish 1 point better than the 9th place team.  You don’t have to beat previous years’ 8th place teams.

Can this Wings team win 6 of 9 to gt to 55?  Doubt it, but they may not have to.  PHX has been hottest of late but hasn’t shown staying power all year.  They did have an impressive run in the playoffs last year.

Detroit will leave enough points on the 8th place table if someone gets hot.

Needless to say a VAN win at home over PHX would be big for Detroit.  VAN has much at stake also, guaranteed home ice in the playoffs if they hold off MIN, or a potentially quick, precarious drop to 6th.

Edmonton has much higher motivation than ANA, who with a 9 point lead on LA probably just want to stay healthy.

The Wings could learn something from my kiddo’s baseball team this weekend. We were playing “above our pay grade” against majors teams (the cream of the crop).
We lost Fri nite fair n square by 5 runs, but battled hard all game. Saturdays double header saw us take both games to extra innings to lose by one run each game. Our boys played their hearts out against superior opponents and gave’em them a handful. Hard to tell a bunch of 11 year olds they should be proud as hell of what they just did on the field even though they didn’t make it to bracket day on Sunday.

Oh Kate, I should have made it clear that I have in no way given up.  I’m definitely in the “it ain’t over ‘til it’s over” camp and until it’s over, I always have hope because anything - ANYTHING - can happen.  I’m just having a harder time keeping the feeling of doom at bay right now.  But I’m with our Wings until the season ends, and forever after.

LET’S GO RED WINGS !!!!!

Missed the LB yesterday, but caught the game on dvr delay.

I saw this in the ESPN power rankings that came out this morning:

Offense once again deserts the Red Wings, who are 21st in goals scored per game after a 1-0 loss at home to St. Louis on Sunday.

Fat, drunk and scoreless is no way to go through life, son.

BTW, the Wings also statistically rank:

13th in GA

14th in PP (I’m shocked it’s that high)
2nd in PP opportunities
8th in PP goals

21st in PK
12th in PP opportunities against
6th in power play goals against

13th in road record
16th in home record

Good teams get consistent play.  DET are not consistent, therefore not good.

That is not to say they cannot get hot.  But the trend after 40 games isn’t so shiny.

Love all you whiny ass red wing fans lol. Zetterberg was hitting perron in the face its a penalty.. i thought both should of got penalties and perron an extra 2 for instigation or something. Also the balls you guys have for coimplaining about the reffing.. its really amusing considering our captain Backes got the most BS call of the year when he got called for a head hit that never came close. Wings scored on the PP to seal the game and backes was kicked out. Keep your bitchin and cant wait until your precious streak ends. Sincerely, Hope your golf clubs are clean

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Just kidding.

Bur this is disturbing; Khan tweets today:

I think Bertuzzi and Samuelsson will play this season. Not as certain about Helm.

Capt. Obvious says that ain’t good.

The Blues outta be able to give lessons on polishing up the golf clubs.
The WIngs can show them how to polish the Cup if it ever makes its way to Saint Louis.

Probably coated with dust from lack of use over the last 21 years. Enjoy your trip to Toronto this summer, since that the only place anyone from St. Lose ever gets to see the Stanley Cup.

A Good night for those above the playoff tideline, both Edmonton and Phoenix lost in regulation, burning up 2 points.

9 games remaining for Detroit, Phoenix, Edmonton and Columbus.

Dallas has 1 game in hand and can draw to within 2 points of Detroit tonight with a home win over LA..

Another thing going on tonight is the Gold Medal game of the Women’s World Championships.  Team USA vs. Team Canada!  The game is being streamed live at usahockey.fasthockey.com at 7:30 EDT.

Phil Kessel’s sister plays for Team USA.  She’s very talented.  We also have a very good goaltender.

Just making the playoffs behind the Blues mean we play Chicago, who does have significantly more talent than we do.

Making it to 7th would mean we would play Anaheim, a team we pwned in their barn a couple of weeks ago.

Passing St Louis would take a lot of wins, which isn’t likely.
