Columbus Blue Jackets/Detroit Red Wings Preview And Notes

12/16/2014 at 10:13am EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Detroit Red Wings look to end their season-long three-game winless skid Tuesday against a much different Columbus team than the one they faced four weeks ago.

The Red Wings whipped the Blue Jackets 5-0 at Nationwide Arena on Nov. 18. It was the start of a six-game winless streak (0-5-1) that left Columbus with an NHL-worst 6-15-2 record.

The Blue Jackets have won six games in a row since them, behind the strong play of goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

"They're hot. They're playing extremely well," Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard said. "They're getting guys back (from injuries). They got (Brandon) Dubinsky back in the lineup, which has seemed to give them a real big boost.

"They're playing hard and Bobrovsky is playing really well. He's had a couple of nights where he's had a lot of work and he's won games for them."

from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch.

The six victories have elevated the Blue Jackets only to 26th in the league and 14th in the Eastern Conference. But they were seven points out of the final playoff spot in the East going into games last night.

With 53 games to go, that seems doable.

“Credit to the guys in the room for sticking together and remaining professional,” Wisniewski said. “But it’s a reminder. On one hand, you can change your fortune around pretty quick when you start winning games and you start believing in each other and the confidence builds. But still have three or four teams to leapfrog to get where we want to be. So it’s a reminder of how much the start to the season hurt us.”

Season series: Goalie Jimmy Howard made 28 saves to lead the Detroit Red Wings past the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-0 on Nov. 18. Despite the loss, the Blue Jackets are 7-2-1 against the Red Wings in their past 10 games.

Blue Jackets team scope: Columbus remains in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division, but after an injury-plagued first third of the season, the Blue Jackets are healthier and climbing up the standings. They have won their past six games, including a shootout win against the first-place Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. Columbus' winning streak is the second-longest active run in the NHL behind the Anaheim Ducks' seven-game stretch, but five of its six wins came either by one goal or in a shootout. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky has started all six games, compiling a .943 save percentage and a 1.91 goals-against average over that span. Bobrovsky could get some help on the back end Tuesday. Defenseman Fedor Tyutin, who has been out since mid-November with a lower-body injury, may play, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

Red Wings team scope: Detroit has climbed into a battle for first place in the Atlantic Division, but the Red Wings haven't helped themselves with their current three-game losing streak (0-1-2). Detroit's 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday may have ceded two important points to a division rival, but as the Red Wings prepare to open a four-game homestand there may be reinforcements. Forward Justin Abdelkader (upper body) and defenseman Danny DeKeyser (upper body) could be back in the lineup, and forwards Tomas Tatar and Johan Franzen should be on the ice despite missing practice Monday because of illness. "I assume they're both playing," coach Mike Babcock told MLive.com. "All we did today was say, 'What's going to make you best for tomorrow? Is a day off going to make you best or skating make you best?' So that's the decision we made today."
