Classically Screwed

Two months ago a guy named Jeff Arnold wrote an article for Puck Daddy that went all specific on what kind of economic impact Michigan would feel if the worst commissioner in the history of professional sports (and pivot man in the center of three circle je....work stoppages) canceled the Winter Classic.  You probably read it. I never did until today.

(UM Athletic Director Dave) Brandon said earlier this year that an average Michigan home game generates between $14 million and $15 million for local businesses, including hotels and restaurants.

Brandon expects the Winter Classic could generate even more money, which has been evidenced in recent years. According to the league, the annual winter outdoor game generates between $30 million and $36 million for host cities.

In February at the official announcement of the Winter Classic's 2013 destination, NHL chief operating officer John Collins estimated the economic impact for the weeklong hockey celebration could top the $75 million scale for southeast Michigan, taking both the Detroit and Ann Arbor venues into consideration.

Man. That's a lot of money.  Lots of cash lost for the well-to-do small business owners in Detroit.  They've been rolling in the cash for years, so losing out on millions shouldn't hurt, eh?  And 75 million for a rich region like SE Michigan? Shittttt....whatever.  They'll make it up somehow, right Gary?  And if they don't?  Screw it.  The NHL's due to lose right along with them, right?  If you can't share the wealth, share the pain, eh?

For one thing, NHL operations people haven't been to Ann Arbor since September and don't have any visits planned for November, the person said. Also, the NHL would lose only a $100,000 security deposit if the game is canceled by Friday, whereas the amount would increase if a change was made afterward.

That's Helene St. James moonlighting for USA Today, probably because the Free Press won't pay her to write about hockey because there is no hockey and every one of us is tired of reading negative garbage in the Detroit dailies, the same dailies that have seen distribution drop by hundreds of thousands because the rich small business owners and the upper crust in SE Michigan have had to give up luxuries like, you know, newspapers over the years.

I literally have no idea what I'm going to do when the midget lets hockey come back.  Part of me says it's just not worth my effort or my stress.  Forget my money.  It's disgusting that I'm even considering devoting my time and emotions to this charade ever again.  But if you pressed me right now? I'd be back.

That's now. Today.  If they cancel this Classic, this frigging boon to a Michigan economy that needs it so badly?  Then we're looking at a whole new level of prison washroom affection.  This is a regional violation. It's a state-wide blueballer that can't be forgiven.  We have a whole list of reasons why Gary Bettman is just plain garbage, and that's not even counting the 3 work stoppages.  We can look at it from multiple layers and angles: expansion where it's not needed, TV on OLN, suspensions, lack of suspensions, terrible officiating and blatant biases.  We wouldn't even have to consider labo(u)r strife when judging the shrew and gauging his ineptitude.

But now there's this.  And it's gonna happen. It could be any minute. Bettman's gonna cancel this thing and the impact on Michigan is going to be huge.  It's not taking money out of wallets but it's reneging on what could have been. He raised the hopes of our state and the dollar signs starting appearing in front of people who really needed to see them.  Now he's going to take them away and he really, genuinely doesn't care what the impact is.  And that's the mark of a scum bag.

It's a tough call, eh? If you live in Michigan? It's a tough call.  Are you coming back if (when) Bettman cancels the Classic?  Maybe.

But maybe not.  I'm used to hockey this time of year and there is none. And I'm doing ok, Gary.  Telling you to suck it one final time might not be as tough as I thought it would be.

My daughter called me two weeks ago because she heard the lockout had been solved and she was so excited.  “We’re going to Ann Arbor now!”  One of the worst things I had to do was tell her it wasn’t true and we probably wouldn’t be going.  I have to tell her that it is going to be canceled.

My heart hurts for my home state and the huge economic loss that this brings.  Also, I hurt for the businesses around any hockey arena and the huge impact that this lockout has on them.  For what?

I can’t say I wouldn’t be back, I know I will be.  I always say, “I’m a hockey fan in spite of the NHL.”  I just wish the NHL/Bettman would stop trying to kill my beautiful sport.

This is one less season of Datsyuk/Zetterberg.  It makes me sad and then it makes me very angry.

I will only follow the Wings via computer.  No more buying merch.  No more traveling to see the Wings play in other venues.  If the NHL (players and owners) don’t give a flying f@ck about me as a fan than why should I give a rat’s a$$ about millionaires and billionaires who can’t get their collective s#it together.  SUCK IT NHL.

I will just be glad to have my money back.  I posted this before, and mostly out of spite, but I will be expecting interest back on the money I loaned the league for these so called ‘tickets’.  I don’t really expect this, but it does kind of ruffle my feathers that the amount of money spent on WC tickets is astronomical, they made a ton of money on interest alone by holding onto our ticket money.  I bought the cheap tickets, with an average price of $127 for one WC ticket and one GLI ticket.  Most tickets were double that price, but $127 x 90,000 = $11,430,000.  I used 90,000 for tickets sold since I heard that as a number of tickets sold right about the time the lockout started.  So you can see the potential profit for this game on gate numbers alone.  What ticks me off is they sold us these tickets pretending there was going to be a game on Jan 1, or a season much less, and still took our money knowing damn well there wasn’t going to be anything.  And to top it off, at $20~ in service fees per ticket, I guarantee I’m assed out $100~ even if I get ‘refunded’.  If 90,000 tickets were sold, and they keep $20 per ticket, that’s $1,800,000.  Don’t they only have to pay $100,000 to UM if they cancel?  Gee, seems like even cancelling the WC is profitable for the NHL.

They lied, they deceived, they stole.

Sorry, but I don’t see many people retiring as fans once this is all over. And seeing as Bettman is closer to the end of his reign than the beginning, what good would it be to stay away from the NHL once he is gone?

We’re all hockey fans first and foremost. And, like it or not, we do realize the NHL is home to the greatest hockey players on the planet.

If you’re a fan of the game, you will eventually return to the NHL once the dust settles. Why? Because you’re a hockey fan first. If you were an NHL fan first, then it would make sense to abandon the league once and for all.

But when Bettman is gone, and Fehr is gone, and the greatest players capable of playing this great game return to the 30 (or 32) teams that comprise the NHL, how could you ignore it?

I’ll split… for a while at least. Minimum one yr but more than likely a couple yrs. If not more. I did it during the last cancelation, I shall do it again. I’ve got live hockey right down the road so it “ain’t no thing”. Also, when the feckin Garden Gnome leaves his ever so douchey underling Bill Daly will take over. More of the same….

Allow me to reiterate my stance.  I’m not giving up on the Wings, after all I’m a Wingaholic.  But I’ve been a devoted follower of the NHL for many, many years.  I will continue to follow the Wings but only by computer.  I am giving up on the NHL as a fan.  If the Wings aren’t involved than neither am I.  No more watching 5-8 games a week, no more watching quarter and semi finals or Cup finals unless the Wings are involved.  The NHL can kiss my a$$ goodbye. I don’t matter to them… so they no longer matter to me.

I hear ya Cal. I also am a true red wing fan ,but I am buying season tickets for the local ECHL team which are less than a center ice package. I am doing this with my teamates from my beer league team which remind me alot of the 19 here. They are a bunch of transplants from the north and we love to tailgate before and after our games. Chief, our official beer is Yuengling and we even have a retired F-14 pilot on the team.
My shoulder is getting much better with strength training in therapy now. Hopefully will be back on the ice after Thanksgiving and ready for the season starting in January.

Good luck with your rehab David.  I made those statements with a great deal of sadness because I love to watch the game of hockey.  It is with a heavy heart that I turn my back on the NHL.  Then again, this leaves me with more money for those porn sites. tongue wink

Unlike Quake, I will not be spending the money saved on porn. wink

It’s hard, but I can live without the games.

The Live Blogs?? Well that’s another story. Little did I know that without that forum to say all the stupid things that live in my head, I have to say them to regular, non-19 types.

And that’s not working out real well for me, so far.

The NHL isn’t getting a dime from me this season even if any of it is salvaged. Probably not going to get much of my attention either.  Next year? We’ll see. I’m sure I’ll get back into it eventually, but for the foreseeable future, I just don’t care anymore.

I’m gonna find a way for the OHL and AHL to get more of my money instead.

Not so much. Watching lots more college football, and my wife comments favorably about how good the yard looks. I actually moved a dog crate and a big cooler from in front of the house (it’s a Southern thing, if I had to explain…) Reading more books, never a bad idea.

I bought tix to the Tigers Epic Fail World Series in downtown Detroit, and as I used frequent flyer miles to get there felt heady and also bought a Lions ticket as I had never seen a Lions game in person, ever, or anything in Ford Field.  Between the Lions afternoon game and the disastrous WS Game 4 Sunday night I walked down Brush, packed with thousands in Honolulu Blue shuffling down the asphalt, to Greektown and tried to get into Pizza Papalis.  There were already about a dozen lined up out the door, but the Greeter said I could probably fit in solo around by the bar,  which I did.  There were still 4 hours until the WS game started, and as I’d crashed the Comerica gate 2 1/2 hours before game time the night before there was no hurry to spend more hours aimlessly circling the Comerica vendors in even chillier and windier weather than Saturday night.

The waitress remarked about being choked with patrons between games but said “we complain but of course I really like it when we’re this busy”.  I said something like,  “Yeah, and with no hockey this winter you’ve only got about 4 more Lions games like this until April when baseball starts again.” -  She got a look of horror on her face, ” You don’t think there’s going to be a hockey season?  That’d be awful!”

As my daughter also works in the Hospitality industry and depends on tips, I know it is a crusher when no customers show up.

“I got to be honest, I personally think he’s an idiot,’’ White said of Bettman. “Since he’s come in I think he’s done nothing but damage the game. If you think of all the moves he’s made, the teams that are all struggling seem to be the teams he put in places where there’s (less support for hockey).

One reason to hope for a return of hockey, to cheer Ian White for his Chelios-like comments.
