Boston Bruins/Detroit Red Wings Preview And Notes

12/29/2014 at 6:59am EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Detroit Red Wings have won two games in row, both when trailing after the second period.

That's the first time they've done that since Jan. 7-8, 2011, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

"We won," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "That's what the league's about, try to find ways each and every night."

They'll take points any way they can get them, but they'll look to start on time Monday against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

Here are five things to watch this week:

1. First visit to Boston

Few could have expected the Red Wings would have eight more points at this stage of the season than the Bruins, last season's Presidents' Trophy winners who defeated Detroit in the first round of the playoffs.

The Bruins have gone 5-7-3 since their 13-8-0 start.

The teams split two games at Joe Louis Arena one week into the season - the Red Wings won 2-1 on Oct. 9 and the Bruins prevailed 3-2 in a shootout on Oct. 15.

TV: FS-D, NESN, NBCSN, TVA SPORTS

Season series: The Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings have split their prior two meetings, with Detroit winning 2-1 on Oct. 9 and Boston winning 3-2 in a shootout Oct. 22. Both games were played in Detroit. Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist had two goals in the two games.

Red Wings team scope: After going winless for a six-game stretch (0-2-4) the Red Wings will look for their third straight win. It would appear that the more the Red Wings avoid the shootout, the better off they are. All four losses in that six-game stretch came in the shootout and they are 1-7 in shootouts this season. Goaltender Jimmy Howard returned to the lineup in a 3-2 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday after an injury absence, making 31 saves. Nyquist scored the game-winning goal against Ottawa and had three assists in the Red Wings’ 6-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 23.

Bruins team scope: The Bruins are in the unusual position of being outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture at this time of the year. They had their two-game winning streak snapped by the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 6-2 loss on Saturday. Just when it seemed like the Bruins were getting healthy, they didn’t have forwards Patrice Bergeron or Milan Lucic for practice on Sunday. According to coach Claude Julien both players are day-to-day and their availability won’t be determined until Monday. The Bruins’ offense continues to struggle, as they rank 21st in the NHL with 2.53 goals per game.
