Abel to Yzerman

Beyond The Headlines, Detroit Talk

from Chris Johnston of Sportsnet,

What Steve Yzerman needs more than anything else right now is time.

Time to stockpile future assets for the Detroit Red Wings. Time to watch that next crop of young players grow, develop and thrive.

Yzerman has only just started dipping his toes into remaking the organization during his first season on the job — bringing in young forwards Robby Fabbri and Brendan Perlini in trades — and was pretty candid in this interview with Ken Kal about where his mind is at.

Of particular note was Yzerman’s thoughts on the upcoming Feb. 24 trade deadline: “Our goal is to, if we can, acquire more draft choices. How do you do that? You know, it really depends on what other teams want to do. So I can’t give you a definitive answer. My plan isn’t to be passive, certainly, I’m looking for ways to build for the future.”

The Red Wings currently have three veteran defencemen on expiring deals: Mike Green, Trevor Daley and Jonathan Ericsson (who already passed through waivers unclaimed this season).

Goaltender Jimmy Howard is a pending UFA, too.

Yzerman understands that he’s not dealing from a position of strength.

It would be foolish to bet against the shrewd Red Wings GM over time. The present? Well, it’s not so pleasant.

more topics like the Penguins are Cup contenders, and outdoor game in Edmonton and teams with cap space...

If I were Yzerman I’d want time to speed up a bit more than anything, get out from under those terrible Nielsen and Abdelkader contracts…

Oh I love the dreamland game, let’s see, I want to play in the NHL and have the richest contract in history and score the Game 7 Double OT winner, my grand daughter wants a unicorn, my grandson wants his own monster truck, what’s that honey, my wife she just wants a fully staffed luxury Yacht to travel to our villas in Europe

He doesn’t need time, he has time, they didn’t fire Ken Holland, they sure as #$%& are not firing YzerGod, he’ll just have to deal with people whining and crying.

What he “needs” more than anything else is for the Red Wings lotto ball to be picked first this year, and for that player to become a generational star.

He could also use a few very needy win now GMs to over-value one of our slugs or young guys and offer him way to much in terms of picks and prospects, that would help too.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y.
