Abel to Yzerman

Bad Stats

Ugh. Team stats are below.

Not a good look, but expected from a team ranked #31 out of 31 teams.

Max Bultman of The Athletic,

Their negative-53 goal differential for the season isn’t just the lowest in the NHL; it’s more than twice as low as the next nearest team: New Jersey, at negative-25. And that Devils team beat Detroit 5-1 just over a week ago.

The Red Wings’ leading goal scorer, Anthony Mantha, suffered a lower-body injury early against New Jersey, and they’ve scored a grand total of four goals since then across five games. And really, it’s an even bigger problem than that, because Mantha’s emergence was already one of the few big-picture success stories for the team this season. The Robby Fabbri trade, and Filip Hronek‘s and Tyler Bertuzzi’s strong starts have been others, but recently, they’ve been quieter too.

That, really, is the gloomiest part of the whole situation. Just about everyone expected the Red Wings to lose this season. But they were a team (arguably the only such team in the city) that had a young core leading the way. Even if the Red Wings struggled, it would be easy enough to latch onto the progress Mantha, Bertuzzi, Hronek, Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou were making to help the days pass.

I’m starting to think we may struggle making it out of the first round of the playoffs this year

“With such a young team, what was the danger of this stretch snowballing?”

What a dopey question to ask. In 29 games the Wings have losing streaks of 4, 8 and 9 games. This has been snowballing for over a month.

I’m glad we signed Filppula to provide stability.  Imagine where this team would be without his -23.

In the defense of Cholowski, while he’s struggled mightily in several games, he’s also mostly been paired 2nd pair AHL dmen.  Most rookies, especially with his upside, are paired up with a competent NHL vet to play with to help them through, we have none to give him. Could be a bad spiral the kid goes down if we can’t find some stability on his side so he can stabilize himself.

Who would you play in Flip’s place? I certainly wouldn’t want to put someone like Veleno in that spot, he’s been decent but not great in GR. Flip is a place holder and nothing more, to give the youngsters a chance to develop in the AHL. Hopefully those guys or some lottery luck will get us some real players with a future in the next 12 to 18 months. For now we have to embrace the suck.

I don’t know…perhaps Y should have looked at different UFA options.  What I do know is I wouldn’t have given Fil a 2 year contract at $3/year.

I also don’t think I would have sweetened his contract with these:
2019: Full No Trade Clause
2020: 8-team no trade list

Not a whole lot of proven UFA centers willing to sign a manageable contract on a bad team.

Which is exactly why I can’t believe we’re paying Fil $3/year with NTC’s.

Oh, you didn’t think we’d be able to attract Fil with that sweet of a deal? Me either.

Yzerman signs Fil, it’s a “sweet deal” despite the second lowest +/- in the NHL (second only to AA).

If Holland had signed Fil with those contract terms, it’d be the end of the world.

Whatever man.  Hope you are enjoying watching him skate the puck into the offensive zone, stopping at the circle, and dumping it…his signature move for over a decade…not like he’s not going anywhere for the next year and a half.

Yeah, my tongue was firmly in cheek on that comment. I agree it’s not the best contract in the world (though it certainly looks like it next to Nielsen’s). The point was that there probably weren’t any other better options.
