Around the Christmas Blogosphere

A Christmas Eve spin around the hockey sphere.  You should know that as I bring you this hearth-warming holiday edition, I do so to the sounds of the Beatles “Love” album.  If you’re a Beatles fan, and you haven’t heard this thing…get it.  Download it, pirate it, buy it, borrow or steal it.

We begin with Jes Golbez, a true poet.

Joe Thornton was nestled all snug in his bed
While visions of Sudafed danced in his head.
And Rolston in his ‘kerchief, and Walz in his cap
Had just settled down and started playing the trap,

When out on the ice arose such a clatter…
Could it be that Jeff O’Neill possibly got fatter?
Away to ice, JFJ went like a flash,
and said “I can’t believe I paid 2 milion for this trash”

The fact that I pointed you there, even after Jes forgot me in his earlier post of holiday tidings, should prove to you what a Christmas kind of guy I am.

On Frozen Blog, a site I keep intending to mention but forget two seconds after I remind myself, tells DC hockey fans of a great way to give something back after the holiday.

Here’s a great opportunity to continue the season of giving and get something back in return. On January 4th, the Caps will be holding a blood drive in the Dewar’s Clubhouse at Verizon Center from noon until 6. Those who participate will receive two tickets to a Caps game.

Also check out Frozen Blog’s Christmas card, a slight revision to the blogosphere’s best header.

In my opinion, anyone who can work a Seinfeld reference into any part of their life is my kind of blogger.  Mike Chen is one of those guys.

In celebration of the most magnificent of holidays, I’ve shared the Festivus spirit with each NHL team. I’ve either aired my Grievances (who I’m disappointed with) or challenged them to Feats of Strength (things they need to do to be successful).

Detroit Red Wings
Feats of Strength: Getting the Red Wing power play to look like the Red Wings of the recent past.

0 for our last seven Mike.  After a brief hot streak, it’s looking stale again.

Another reason Chen’s fleeting up my list of favorite bloggers?  Here’s what he had to say in a farewell post to VCOE.

...raise your favorite adult beverage (mine’s Newcastle Brown Ale) in honor of three years of VCOE!

Newcastle is a magnificent beverage.

And VCOE…as we know, is not gone.  Oh no.  Drunken liveblogging will continue.  Insane wagers will too.  And dancing drunken photoshopped bookstore owners?  Yep. Still there for you

While there is mirth and frivolity at Canucks and Beyond, it’s a heady dose of holiday anger at Hockeybird.

Deck the halls with a five-game losing streak! I don’t think I’ve been this hostile on Christmas Eve since that time I had to call the cops on my singing neighbors for demanding figgy pudding and then refusing to leave. And I can’t even figure out who to be mad at anymore, as it seems like everyone has played Secret Santa for the opponents in the past week. The entire roster deserves coal in their stockings. And I wouldn’t mind seeing Tom Renney punched in the nuts by an elf or two. Ho ho ho.

That, my friends…that is quality stuff.

And let’s end with a few holiday wishes for me, The Chief.  Here’s what I’d like for Christmas.

* A 20-point playoff for Pavel Datsyuk.
* A healthy second half for Niklas Kronwall.
* Effective groin therapy for you know who.
* Phonics lessons for Mike Babcock.
* A set of brass ones for the Deep Diggers.  Just one set. They can pass them around, share them in true Christmas spirit.
* A job definition for Steve Yzerman.  The Wings cannot let this turn into a Marino-like situation.
* A return of energy to Joe Louis Arena.  I’m afraid this is the most difficult gift to expect. We’ve come to demand too much and be satisfied with too little.  I’m afraid the only thing that can possibly do the trick will be a team that fights for the 8 spot, then wills its way through the playoffs.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
