Sitting at the dinner table tonite, and yes—there will be hockey involved in this post, our Kindergartner decides to tell a story, a nifty little diddy about a racoon who missed his mommy when he went off to racoon kindergarten. Apparently, according to daughter number 3 who says she “wants to be a Navy Chief” when she grows up, mommy racoon kissed the palm of racoon jr. every morning before he headed off to school, thereby leaving her love in his hand for the rest of the day.
“She put her love in his hand,” our young Chief told us. “No…,” she amended, “she
in his hand.”
I saw it coming and cringed. I looked five seconds into the future and resigned myself to the inevitable, and wasn’t disappointed.
“Really honey,” said my wife. “Daddy does that quite a bit too.”
So…let’s talk hockey.
Jan Mursak played last year in Saginaw, which happens to be my hometown and the former home to the Saginaw Gears; the same Gears of Dennis Derosiers and Marcel Comeau, hockey heroes of my youth. I heard “Rock and Roll Part II” for the first time at the Saginaw Civic Center and saw my Uncle Duke beat the hell out of somebody minutes later for spilling a beer down my back. A double shot of family fun.
Bruce MacLeod doesn’t know my Uncle Duke, but I’ll bet he’d like him. Everyone does, unless he’s punching you in the face. MacLeod knows Mursak though, and just maybe…so will you soon enough.
Because he played in a hockey power like the Czech Republic as an 18-year-old, Mursak was seen by scouts and eventually drafted by the Red Wings.
That led Mursak to playing in Saginaw as a junior, learning more about playing on the small North American ice surfaces, picking up the English language and finishing his final year of high school at Saginaw Nouvel Catholic. He also set up his own web site (http://www.janmursak.com).
Not a big Nouvel fan. If my memory serves, they were a bunch of candy asses. But, hey, good for Mursak.
Hey…cool. The Free Press has the transcript of the Ken Holland press conference. Nice job guys.
Oh, nevermind. We had it about 30 hours prior. Woops. Dirty little bloggers beat you to the punch…again.
So…you’ve had a day to digest the new format. Like it? The banner sucks, I’m aware. Working on it. Might even be open to a new one…hint, hint.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
