A Veteran Defenseman May Be Needed By The Wings

08/31/2020 at 12:06pm EDT

from Max Bultman of The Athletic,

Scott Cruickshank has written that Travis Hamonic and Erik Gustafsson are likely out in Calgary. Justin Schultz certainly seems to be in Pittsburgh, and the unsuccessful Tyson Barrie experiment in Toronto likely means he’ll be a free agent as well. Sami Vatanen is scheduled to hit the market out of Carolina, too.

All of those players offer less upside than Krug, with arguably similar risk on a medium-term deal since they’re not starting from the same elite ground as him. A marginally shorter term length and lower cap hit, though, would be advantages.

Chris Tanev, if Vancouver doesn’t extend him, could be an interesting candidate after helping the Canucks turn the corner in their rebuild....

Fellow right-hander Trevor van Riemsdyk profiles as a true defensive defenseman, and could provide the short-term veteran stability the Red Wings need. Other short-term veteran options could include Mark Borowiecki in Ottawa, or Michael Del Zotto in Anaheim.

more ($$$) and yest Torey Krug is mentioned first...

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
