A Driven Dylan Larkin Wants To Be “The Guy” For The Detroit Red Wings

from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of NHL.com,

"I want to be the guy," Larkin said. "I honestly don't believe in No. 1 centers in the NHL [in terms of labels]. Who's the No. 1 center in Toronto? Who's the No. 1 center in Pittsburgh? You've got to have two centers. [But] I want to be the guy that's out there whether we're down by a goal and we need to score with a minute left or we're up by a goal and taking that huge faceoff in your [defensive] zone. So just want to be looked at as that, like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg have for so long in Detroit."

The Red Wings need Larkin to become the guy. Datsyuk left for SKA Saint Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League after the 2015-16 season, the last of Detroit's streak of 25 straight Stanley Cup Playoff appearances. Zetterberg turns 38 on Oct. 9 and has back problems. General manager Ken Holland has said he expects Zetterberg to play this season, but it is not certain.

Larkin turns 22 on Monday. A restricted free agent, he said there are no major issues in contract negotiations. He doesn't feel like a veteran yet, even though he's entering his fourth NHL season and the Red Wings will give opportunities to younger players, including forwards Michael Rasmussen, 19, and Filip Zadina, 18.

Who’s the No. 1 center in Pittsburgh?

Is this an actual question? I mean, does he really not understand that Sydney Crosby is without a shadow of a doubt Pittsburgh’s No. 1 centre?

Has his off-season training program simply been taking puck to the temple?

I certainly think that will happen , soon.  Are we sure he will only be 22 on Monday.  One of a kind!

Tavares and Crosby.

Larkin seems to be very level headed and engaged. He should be a great Captain in the near future. cheese

He’s not there yet and he probably knows that, but he seems to have the
right combination of willingness to carry that weight and the awareness and determination
to know what he needs to improve and the drive to get there.

I think it’s good he understands a contending team needs two top centers.

Hopefully he can be one of them.

Sure, it’s a little hard to live up to Tavares and Mathews and Crosby and Malkin.

If his point is that any of those four guys could be a number one center on most teams
that’s probably true. And look at where those four guys were picked. Not bad to aim high. And hard not to think Larkin is part of the long-term solution in Detroit.

Why am I not surprised a few people are focused on the wrong part of Larkin’s comments?

While not great numbers yet,  statistically he’s already"the guy” in Detroit. Z has been showered with, first unit PP time and the higher scoring players or Larkin’s stats would be even higher. I feel he’ll continue to be the guy in Detroit.

It’s the middle of July with no Karlsson or Pacioretty news. Just having some fun with a standard hockey player quote.

Absolutely this. We could waste time mincing words…or delve into the deeper aspect. The Wings have a big problem with center depth.

Yzer/Fedorov
Datsyuk/Z

Larkin/???

Without Z for sure. The wings have an excellent 2c in Larkin and a marginal 3c in Nielsen. Maybe if Nielsen is asked to do more offensively he can be a serviceable 2c….maybe.

Hopefully, next year, Huges is 1C.

The words may be the same, but the context certainly is not.

I can see D-Boss in the role he wants to assume. I can also see him wearing the “C” in the future.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!
