As big as this game is, that Phoenix / Columbus game is absolutely huge! The entire complexion of the season could change with the outcome of that game.

RSV

I miss the stress of wondering if we’d get the President’s Trophy.

Update this little graphic to reflect the wonderful choke job by the Devils last night.  2 points tonight really puts the distance between us and The Outsiders.

....and then get bounced in the first round!

Full speed for 60 minutes…..the Quest for 23 continues.

It seems mathematically possible for Detroit to finish 4th in the conference in pts but get the 7th seed.  For that reason they should definitely make it 2 guaranteed spots for each division and 4 “wild cards”.

Thanks, RedM.  Raising a too hot mug-a Kona coffee to the GDT.  Slainte.

“The job is not done,” Abdelkader said. “We don’t want to be waiting till the last game and hoping teams are losing. That’s not a fun position to be in. We have to take care of it ourselves as best we can.”

Shanahan-esque:  “We can’t depend on other people to do our work for us.”  Love it that Abber says, “We.”

Morton’s ok, but Pollock?  Fuch that guy.

Just no overstating just how important is that chart, Bill.  Really, really helpful.

Our.Two.Points.  Earn ‘em, Wings.

I alluded a bit to this when I started posting this year’s Peloton of Suck Charts.  But the NHL is emphasizing a division-centric playoff alignment to reduce travel and increase rivalry.

The exception is that if Detroit is 7 they will be placed into the MetroSexual Division versus (division 1, Conference 2) Pittsburgh, and even if they defeat Pittsburgh they will stay and play the 2-3 MetroSexual winner.  The Conferences do not reseed after each round as in past years.

That would be the kicker then.  I suppose fairness in competition doesn’t matter as much as the face that the NHL still is big business.

While it is now technically possible for a team with a better record in a conference to miss the playoffs than one with a worse record (if team #6 in one division has a better record than team #3 in another division) it seems like it will probably never happen…. so at least the NHL isn’t as bad as the NFL (where teams that go 8-8 make it in when teams that go 10-6 get kicked to the curb).
