Khan(!): Chelios Out

Chris Chelios has apparently fallen victim to the dreaded "undisclosed lower body injury," and won't be in the lineup tonite. He was apparently hurt in the third period Wednesday night. Khan(!) Weblog

It'll be just the second game Chelios has missed this season. Andreas Lilja will replace him. Robert Lang, who missed the last two periods because of a stomach virus, is fine and will play tonight. Mikael Samuelsson skated but won't play until Sunday, Babcock said.
Here's what former Deep Digger captain Ted Kulfan has to say about it in his blog. Kulfan/Detroit News
Have a great Christmas every one, and safe, happy, and prosperous New Year. No hockey talk today or tomorrow. Just enjoy the time with family and friends. We'll get back to hockey quick enough.
Thanks Ted.

Got Sources?

Oh, the stress.  Counting down the hours until the Wings and the hated Jackets renew their savage hostilities tonite in Nationwide.

Meanwhile, he who charges idiots to read outlandish trade rumours is at it again.  Failed “musician” and icon of the idiots Dwayne Klessel claims he has “sources” in the Wing organ-I-zation.  These “sources” are feeding him amazing info.

Anyway, according to a source in Detroit, the Wings have interest in Mike Comrie or Shane Doan.

Babcock: 4th Line Needs More Minutes

I may be slightly sarcastic in my reviews (or outright fabrications) of Mike Babcock's comments to our DD's, but that shouldn't come across as an indictment on his coaching ability. He's proven himself, last year's Punch in the Face notwithstanding. He's dealt with the losses of Shanny and Yzerman. He's shuffled an injury-plagued lineup the whole year. And he's made good on a guarantee that this team would be tougher to play against. But he still sees room for improvement...from himself.

Happiness For The Mule; Angry Minnesota Deep Diggers

I guess I started to dislike the state of Minnesota in 1987. I believe it was game 4 against the Twins, maybe game 3. Darrell Evans was picked off third, ending a rally and essentially ending the Tigers' magical run. That series really blurs for me. I remember that play in Detroit, the standing O the Tiger faithful gave Evans the next day (which reduced little Bobby Costas to tears), NBC showing closeups of Gibby every time he struck out and went NBA on any dugout object he could find, and I remember those infernal homer hankies in that plastic dome of pure evil. I'm quite certain the Wings had that in mind when they laid the final piece of wood to the Wild last night, ending Little Gary's series of fun.

19 At WJC

JV Deep Digger Georgie Sipple reports this afternoon that he watched some tv.

Steve Yzerman got some face time during the World Junior Championships in Sweden on Wednesday. Yzerman was interviewed during the second period of the Canada-U.S. game.

TSN reporter James Cybulski asked Yzerman if he’d thought about the ceremony to retire his No.19 next week. The ceremony at Joe Louis Arena begins at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, prior to the game against the Anaheim Ducks.

“I really haven’t,” Yzerman said. “I’ve been actually surprisingly busy doing a lot of things, watching our team play and then watching some of our prospects play.”

A2Y Administravia

Herringbone, blogger extraordinaire and new rival, pointed out today that "Mickelson" hadn't transferred over from the old glossary to the new one. That has been corrected, as well as a few other additions. Comments: those of you kind enough to leave comments lately have been disappointed to find that my response time to your witticisms has been less than stellar. I have an excuse, but I won't bore you with it. Keep 'em coming.

Lidstrom Overtakes Fitzpatrick

The fact that I wrote that headline says a whole lot about the state of the NHL today. Take a deep breath message boarders. Rest your fingers. Your cries of injustice have been heard. TSN

The journeyman Vancouver Canucks defenceman fell behind Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom to third among Western Conference blue-liners in results released by the league. Anaheim's Scott Niedermayer leads the defencemen with 540,380 votes followed by Lidstrom at 522,345 and Fitzpatrick at 486,842.
I don't know what's been funnier: the Vote For Rory campaign, or the Wing fans at more than a few sites in tears over the development.

April in December?

I'm going to preface this by saying I was not happy when Brendan Shanahan left Detroit. I believe he was the heart and soul of that room, with influence equal to Steve Yzerman's. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether Shanahan's influence was positive or negative. Having said that, here's the bottom line: he's slumping, and with his demise go the Rangers. The Blue Shirts have lost six in a row. Shanahan has one goal his last nine games. Ranger fans are noticing. Blueshirt Bulletin

I think Brendan Shanahan needs a game off. He looks totally spent out there. He is being WAY overused.

By Popular Demand:  The Babcock Consolidated Quote of the Day

Alright…you asked for it. You shall receive it.  There seems to have been a popular response to our recent attempts to translate Mike Babcock’s quotes.  A little background:  Babcock babbles and rarely completes a sentence.  There’s your background.

So, from time to time, the A2Y research staff does their best to re-write his quotes for him in an easier to digest fashion.  Like today’s for instance.

“Sammy’s back, back with us, back tonite and could be back for the Minnesota game which is tonite..a back-to-back-to-back Jack.  Everyone’s back except for Kopecky who’s got the back thing. Well it’s really not a back it’s a collarbone so he’s not back, won’t be back until he says he’s back.  Sammy’s definitely ready to go, at least he was at the morning skate, yesterday’s not today’s.  Love the morning skate. Like to skate.  Everyone likes to skate around Christmas. I had ham for dinner.”

See? Didn’t that make sense?  Did he say that, word for word?  No. But…that’s how we interpreted it.  So, to answer your question Acid Queen…no, there will be no audio evidence.

But, there will be a MBCQD (Mike Babcock Consolidated Quote of the Day).  When?  Daily.

Fun With Chris and AlanaH

The best thing about the post you're about to read? Chris Chelios and AlanaH mentioned in the same space. I know Chelios is a fan of Canucks and Beyond, and I'm positive the feeling is mutual from AlanaH. So it only makes sense that we highlight their friendship as often as possible. On to the subject at hand. Chelios is David Amber's player of choice this week at ESPN.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
