GDT - Game 19: Red Wings (8-7-3) host Canucks (10-3-4) 5:00

Late afternoon game today.  VAN lead their Division (as usual), and had the day off yesterday.  Luongo has been a freaking wall.

For DET, yesterday's game could not have gone better.  The Wings took a 2-0 and didn't blow it, Jimmy pitched a shutout,  DET tallied a PP marker, and nobody got hurt.  Slump-buster or abberation?

Abstinence Is The Only Cure

We've endured losing streaks before.  Usually in February, like this one.  Only those were different because our midget commissioner hadn't ordered a five-month snow day.

GDT - Game 18: Red Wings (7-7-3) host Predators (8-5-5) 7:00

The Wings are 0-3-2 in their last five games. During that stretch they’ve scored just one power play goal and have blown two-goal leads three times.  DET's special teams may take the prize for oxymoron of the year; the PP is beyond pathetic at 12.8% (28).  The PK is just as bad, or worse, at 75.7% (25).  Assuming, on average, DET are assessed 4 minors a game (I don't know what the actual average is), it is almost certain 1 goal for the opposition.  Both are guaranteed momentum killers.

Playoffs?  I just hope we can win a game.

Ready? You’re In Tonight

No Chief in tonight, instead it is me, Paul, pretending to be the Chief.

Game starts just after 1930 hours, I think.

And I think the rudder is in the water, so off we go.

Oh, he just called, forgot, I will leave it up to him to explain why he forgot.  He'll appear soon.

GDT - Game 17: Red Wings (7-6-3) host Blue Jackets (4-10-2) 7:30

DET are now  winless in their last four tilts (0-2-2) as they begin a 3 game homestand tonight against CBJ. At the 1/3 point of the season, the Wings sit 9th in the West.

CBJ are in the lead for the Seth Jones Sweepstakes; at 4-10-2, they own the worst record in the league.  The Blue Jackets are 1-6 on the road this season, thier lone road win coming on opening night at NSH.

The proverbial "must win" game for the Wings, wonder who shows up tonight?

The Main Hatchway’s Given In

Just go ahead and let it fly.  The vomit.  Don't be embarrassed.  We'll laugh, because watching adults throw up is funny.  But we'll be spewing vomitus at the same time, which will ramp up the hilarity to a redolent degree.

Mikael Samuelsson is on the PP point.  Tatar is the "big net front presence".  Dan Cleary on the first unit.

The Wings have lost three in a row. Half the team remains hurt. Tick Tock is in a slumber of self-denial, with no moves in sight.

And Detroit sits in 9th place.  Gary's playoffs start next week after a 22 game season.

Ready, set, vomit.

GDT - Game 16: Red Wings (7-6-2) at Nashville (7-4-5) 8:00

DET have blown 2-0 leads in two of their past three games and are winless in three (0-2-1) heading into tonight's tilt at Nashville.  They haven't scored a goal in the third period in each of their past three games, registering only 14 shots combined.  Being 0-for-26 on the power play in six road games won't help matters much.

NSH cannot score, posting a league low 2.06 G/G.  But when you have Pekka Rinne as a backstop, it just doesn't matter; in his last four games he has been a  wall, 0.57 GAA, and a ridiculous 0.974 save%.

This one could be really ugly.  LGRW

Short, Sweet, Desperate

The sea is angry, my friends.  And so am I. If there’s one youngster I’d like to see play, it’s Mrazek.  Especially against Pinky and the Ingalls sisters.

GDT - Game 14: Red Wings (7-4-2) host Ducks (9-2-1) 7:30

On Wednesday DET saw their season-high three game winning streak slapped down by the cold reality that their special teams play is, both a momentum killer and a game-wrecker.  DET were -2 on special teams, the short-hander and a PP goal against - obviously, DET had no PP goals.

No matter how good DET play at even strength, and they are very good at 1.47 5-5F/A (4), DET's special teams suck the life right out of the game.  STL were being crushed Wednesday until the short-hander.  SOG in the 1st were 11-3, DET; afterwards the shots were 22-7 for STL (yes, 7 SOG for DET in the final 40+ minutes).

The Wings cannot kill a penalty (73.3% (26)), and their PP seldom looks dangerous, let alone pots a goal for the Wings (13.8% (25)).  Momentum killers and game wreckers.

ANA excell at even-strength, 1.71 5-5F/A (2), and their PK is inept as well 69.6% (29).  But their PP actually produces goals for, 23.1% (7).

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
