Up 2-0?  Awesome.  Voox?  Keep ‘Em Comin’.

If you don’t know who Voox is, and if you don’t know his job among the 19?  You might want to stop reading.  As many of you realize by now, the lead to every post shows up on the main page.  But what follows below is an A2Y exclusive.

So if you’re not a Wing fan, and I mean an obsessed one, a pathetic one, one who may stay in bed all day tomorrow if the Wings lose tonite?  Then reading the rest of this probably isn’t something you’d enjoy.

GDT - W.C. Finals, Game 3: Red Wings (2-0) at Blackhawks (0-2) (8:00)

The “young” ‘Hawks are going to be Under Pressure tonight at the United Center.  They have performed well at home in the playoffs, sporting a 5-1 record at the U.C.  But the ‘Hawks are still on the playoff learning curve.

The Red Wings claim they are a confident and patient bunch.  And at least so far in these playoffs, the numbers support their claim:  Ten times, DET have had the lead or been tied after 40 minutes, and on each occasion, DET has won. In 4 of those 10 games, DET, the oldest team in the playoffs, average age of just more than 30 years, scored the winning goal with five or fewer minutes to play.  The reigning Stanley Cup Champions have shown incredible will to fight till the end.

The ‘Hawks played well in game 2, Ozzie was better.  Babcock claimed the Wings had no legs, and they needed the extra day off in the worst way.  We will see tonight if DET can skate with CHI.  We will see how tight CHI is gripping their sticks, and if they can limit their lethal turnovers.  Not a must win game for CHI, but pretty damn close, you can almost hear the fat lady warming up.

Playoff Preps: Zetterberg Style

I rely on you guys too much.  I just assume that if there’s anything I need to see, you’re going to send it to me.  During the playoffs, I rarely look at blogs other than the Wing ones or our opponents’.  Unless, of course, they’re talking about Chris Osgood’s Hall of Fame credentials.  Who can resist that kind of creative debate?  Again and again and again.

My point is this.  James Mirtle posted something pretty cool and I had no idea it was out there.  And that makes me sad.

Throwing Up In Your Mouth Can Be Fun

I’m still working on the trip recap. But I’ll warn you, it may not be finished today.  Two days away from the “real job” always, and there is never an exception, means ugliness when you get back.

On to the matter at hand.  Pavel Datsyuk didn’t practice and Helene St. James says it’s a foot.

Asked if Datsyuk will play in Game 3, Mike Babcock said, “I sure hope so. He’s day-to-day.”

Uncle Mike was cranky when asked about some new line combinations at practice.

To Hockeytown And Back In 40 Hours: A Recap’s Coming

Morning bitches.  I’m back in DC and I’ll have a full recap of the last two days for you at some point today.  Briefly:

—Ty Conklin made himself a hero in the eyes of my 7 year old.  A simple gesture that won’t be forgotten by our family.
—An asswipe DJ in Pittsburgh says the Wings are “living on borrowed time.” Heard that yesterday driving through PA.
—Speaking of PA, every toll booth operator we encountered (about 19 of them) joked with me about wearing a Wing jersey.  They want a rematch.  Badly.
—Almost ended up in Canada because of construction on 75N.  WTF?
—Hawk fans in Hockeytown for Game 2…I thought you guys did pretty well.
—Best sign I saw at the Joe?  “Welcome To A Nightmare On Helm Street”

More on all that later.  For now, you guys know Paul’s under the weather.  A2Y’s taking a backseat in favor of the main page this morning.  Regular juvenilicity will re-commence some time today.

Gamewrecker…Averted

I didn’t even see the goal.  I mean, I saw it. It happened right in front of me, but it happened so fast that I didn’t know who scored it until I asked the dude behind me but he was screaming.  So I asked the dude next to him but he was screaming too.  So I watched the celebration and screamed a bit.

I eventually found out, of course.  And sooner or later we’re gonna have to answer this question: what about Sammy?

But not tonite.

Autumn’s Closing In…Better Live Blog

I haven’t done it yet, but I will.  The day I use the word “bitch” in a post title will be one of my proudest moments in blogging.  I’m tempted every Live Blog but I back off because I’m afraid Paul will ban me from the internet if I do.

On Station. On Time.

After an easy drive that very nearly ended up in Windsor, we’re entrenched at The Anchor Bar.  Live Blog will commence at 1830.

GDT - W.C. Finals, Game 2: Red Wings (1-0) host Blackhawks (0-1) (7:30)

Cliche or not; your best players have to be your best players?  Probably more true for CHI than DET.  In 12 games, Datsyuk has a whopping 5 pts, Homer has 4, and Hossa has 7.  Kane has 12 pts (but is -6), Toews has 10 (-1), and Brouwer 2 (+2).  Sunday was something completely different for CHI.  Kane and Toews were each -3 and had a total of 3 SOG.  Meanwhile not only did Zetterberg (1 g, 1 a, +3) , Cleary (2 g, +3)  and Franzen (1 g, 2a +3) take them to school, they also tied them to the whipping post.  A glance at the team numbers as well as the player stats reveals just how much stronger DET is at 5 on 5 hockey than is CHI.  CHI players have lots of points, but their +/- is not nearly as strong as DET.  DET have a ridiculous 5-5 f/a number at 1.93.  DET then, must stay out of the sin bin.

Finally, here is an interesting tid-bit that portends well for DET:  The Red Wings have eliminated Quenneville-coached teams in each of their last four championship seasons, sending him home three times when he led St. Louis and last year as he led Colorado.

If You’re An Ohio Cop…Don’t Mind Me, Just Keep Dozing

Leaving in, wait one, about twenty minutes.  If I had more time, I’d address this.

TPSH

Chris Osgood is the weakest of the remaining goalies.  His best days are done.

Have at it.  Blast away if you want.  HockeyinHD consistently points out the flaws in practically every one of this guy’s arguments.  This one’s no exception.

Me? I’ll be listening to 20,000 chant somebody’s name tonite.  “The Puck Stops Here” is too long of a name to yell, and we may not be smart or sober enough to get four syllables out consecutively like that.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
