Doing It Right Down In Nashville

As some of you may recall, I used to live in Tennessee.  One thing I learned about that state and about the residents there is that they are patriots to the core.  “God Bless America” is a song that stops you in your tracks down there.  The Pledge of Allegiance has a place in every school, every church and every home.

And they love the military.  In about a week they’re gonna prove it.

Bucci? We’re Not Done With You Just Yet

The last time I saw John Buccigross on television I think he had a perm.  That, in itself, is pathetic.  Men don’t get perms and they don’t use exclamation points.  In his defense, I don’t believe John Buccigross uses exclamation points in his columns for ESPN.

But there are other issues.  One big one that I’m not ready to let go of. Not yet, mainly because this Buccigross thing? It’s the MSM’s view of Detroit in a nutshell so far this year.

Prime Time

Letters To A Nimrod

First of all…

For some reason, you just knew after those three words that you were gonna be irritated back on October 22nd. If someone had just given John Buccigross an open-handed bitch slap right then?  All would be well.  Didn’t happen.  Steve Phillips’ production assistant was busy.  Matthew Barnaby was repeatedly stabbing the exclamation point key. No one stopped Buccigross and now he just looks like a tool.

Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are no longer in their NHL prime.

Oh, and dick? It’s Zetterman.  He dreams in colors.  Red ones.

Going Deep

Craig Custance came up with a good idea.  He ranked the NHL offices in terms of organ-I-zational depth.  Number 1 shocked me.  No, not really.

1. Detroit Red Wings: I think it’s hard for any organization to compete with the Red Wings when it comes to executives at the top. You have the architect of it all in senior vice president Jim Devellano, arguably the best GM in the game in Ken Holland, Team Canada GM and future NHL GM Steve Yzerman, the guy I’d hire tomorrow to run my organization if I inherited an NHL team in assistant GM Jim Nill, and the best European scout around in Hakan Andersson. It’s not hard to figure out why the franchise is great year in and year out.

Digging Friday

Interesting line in the sand drawn between two factions of Wing fans.  One side, the majority, is entrenched in the Mike Babcock camp, fully ready to stand by him until our world crumbles.  The other side, smaller in number but definitely hockey-smart and persuasive, is eager to separate the coach from any success the team has had.  In fact, they’ve opted to claim the Wings succeed in spite of Babcock.

It’s a serious subject, and one you’ll probably find discussed in much greater detail in the comment section here.  So, go there now if you’re all lathered up and ready to use big words and stuff.

Me? I found something else to do.

How’s Your Uncle Now?

Good morning.  Uncle Mike says the doubters can go ahead and suck it.

Chris McCosky

“We are now 9-3-3 since coming back from our trip (to Sweden),” coach Mike Babcock said. “We aren’t winning games in the same fashion that we used to, that’s pretty obvious. But we are finding ways to grind games out and that’s what we have to do.”

I guess, and I’m no pharmacist, that what Babcock has the Wings doing now…is winning games in playoff-like fashion.  Is that gonna be ok with you, or do we need to whine now about how Babcock is winning?

Sammy Was The Father Of Our Four Winds.  Now He’s Back For A Live Blog.

Gritty, tenacious, never lazy and clutch when we least expected him to be.

Wildly innaccurate.  His pucks bounced off jaws, end boards, glass, unsuspecting customers.

That was our Sammy.  We never knew what to expect.  But he did…and that’s cash.  Plenty of it.

Just not in Detroit.

Osgood, Maltby Out….Jimmah, Miller In

More of the Flu.

News

Wings goalie Chris Osgood and forward Kirk Maltby have the flu and will miss Thursday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks at Joe Louis Arena.

Jimmy Howard, who was in goal in Wednesday night’s 9-1 victory over Columbus, will start against the Canucks. His backup will be Daniel Larsson, who was called up from Grand Rapids.

Drew Miller, picked up on waivers Wednesday, will replace Maltby on the fourth line with Justin Abdelkader and Brad May.

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
