The Literate One Turns 40…errrr 38

Update!!!:  1059 EST.  OTC makes a very good point in the comments below.  Baroque’s consistent attempts to raise the level of conversation here could be solved by simply banning her from from the premises.  I’ve created a poll below.  It’s very important that you vote.  We’ll make it a caucus if you want.

We’ve had some pretty enlightening moments here at A2Y the last twelve months, moments that would leave an outsider unfamiliar with our “norms” shaking their heads—and perhaps believing that most of us are “challenged”, or 8 years old.

And we’re cool with that. Well…18 of us are.

Flint Awaits: McCarty Return Could Occur Tonite

It just might be a big frigging night in Flint.  Darren McCarty’s debut with the Generals is still up in the air, but tonite is a possibility.

Brendan Savage/The Flint Journal

“We’re very hopeful,” director of hockey operations Ron Sanko said Thursday night. “But we don’t want to disappoint any fans by saying, ‘Yes, he’s in,’ when we don’t know. We’re still waiting for clearance.

“The minute we know he’s cleared to play, the entire city of Flint will know.”

No word on what specific type of clearance is required from the NHL.  That’s got me wondering a bit. More on that to follow.

Big Al Wakes Up The Diggers

Michigan sports editors must be reading The Wayne Fontes Experience

All this begs a question. Are there 2 teams in all of sports, both elite, both title contenders, that have been so throughly ignored by their local media entities?

Thank God for the Detroit blogosphere…

Big Al takes the Detroit MSM to task for ignoring the Pistons and Wings.  Two days later?

Who’s Your Starter?

A2Y’s San Francisco delegate, Alex, brings up the question below.  It’s the issue we’d all like to avoid for now, but it’s coming down the pike.

Who starts in the playoffs?

Halfway There; Start Preparing For Poultry

Man, the Dallas writers sure took this one hard.  Check this out:

That was the worst loss of the season tonight, and there could be some hell to pay.

Oh. Woops.  That wasn’t a Stars beat writer, it was actually Adrian Dater talking about Denver’s 5-2 loss to Phoenix last night.  Sorry about. Sometimes when I laugh hysterically, I get all fuzzy.

Pre-Dallas Digging

1855We’ll do the liveblog on this post tonite.

Man…getting old sucks.  And no, that’s not a lead-in for a Chelios story.  I’m talking New Year’s recovery time.  Pepe Lopez appeared again, and the results were not good.

No Rush For Homer, Zetterberg or Maltby

Anti-digger Bruce MacLeod blogged from today’s morning skate that all three injured forwards are looking better. Zetterberg’s the closest, followed by Homer than Maltby.  None, however, will play tonite.

MacLeod also provides an update on contract talks between Ken Holland and representatives for Chris Osgood and Andres Lilja.

Both Chris Osgood and Andreas Lilja said Monday that there is no news on their contract talks. Both have reportedly been offered multi-year deals (Osgood, three years, Lilja two years). Neither has signed, however.

The Son Of Hockeytown

When he pummeled Claude Lemieux in March you shook your fist with him.  Every punch to Lemieux’s head was collective vengeance, community payback for a dirty hit too many of us have pointed to as a reason the Wings lost the year before.  Of course it wasn’t.  Lemieux’s assault on Draper was the bitter memory of a series won by a better team and a better goalie.  But Draper’s face became the symbol of that loss.

McCarty’s fists, and maybe a knee if you watch closely enough, closed an early chapter.  Lemieux’s blood on the JLA ice was like tonic to the Detroit masses.  I wish there was a way Al Sobotka could have preserved it there, along the boards, appropriately in front of the Wing bench, for all time.

Western Swing After Action

Another productive trip West.  A whitewash of our JV sisters from St. Louis, a grinding win over the mediocre Dive and last night’s slush-fest in Phoenix.  6 possible points: done.

Check this out:  counting OT and the now completely lifeless shootouts, the Wings have lost seven times on the road out of twenty games.

Of those 7 losses?

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
