Abel to Yzerman
This is a live blog to spite a certain reader who said I wouldn’t show due to the Rocky marathon on Versus. Yes, I watched several hours of Rocky today. And, yes, I’ve stopped watching because the Wings are on. In fact, the Wings are on HDNet tonite. Hasek in net. I have no idea what to expect. I do know that cranberries were available on my dinner table today and I shunned them, because I’m an adult and I eat only the things I enjoy.
Wings/Bubba. Live blog here.
If you eat them because you’re tied to some outdated tradition, some ingrained obligation generationally passed down to you by other members of your family who hate them as much as you but have eaten them because “they have to”...well, then you’re just stupid. Take a stand today. Mumble an, “I’ll pass…” and just see what the reaction is. There’s a lot of other good stuff you can shove down your pie hole and those scrumptious goodies shouldn’t be tainted by cranberry sauce you despise. Will that cause angst among the traditionalists at your table? Perhaps. Is it a chance you’re willing to take? Only you can answer that question. Only you.
Chris Osgood’s your starter. He has to be. 17-1-5 his last 23 starts. 10-1 this year. And a team that plays differently in front of him than they do in front of Hasek.
So, yeah, I was considering NOT live-blogging the game tonite. But the faithful A2Y nineteen would probably just push forward without me anyway. So, it’s on. 1920. It seems that it’s much more effective to just LB via the comment section rather than update the original post, so we’ll just pile on this post and away we go. Crack ‘em if you got ‘em. Back in 45.
To get you ready for tonite’s tilt with the bitter Blues? I give you Gramps.
Uncle Mike’s waffling. Can’t you just imagine the discussions between him, Holland and Scotty? Let me help you out.
Holland: If we sit Dom, who knows how he’ll react? The last thing we want is another “situation.” He could very well go crazy. Literally.
Bowman: Sounds like fun. Sit his ass.
Babcock: I want a Wii for Christmas.
Anti-Digger Bruce MacLeod reports Osgood’s starting tomorrow night against the Bitter Blues.
Coach Mike Babcock said after today’s practice at Joe Louis Arena that Chris Osgood will start in net, Wednesday, against the St. Louis Blues. Dominik Hasek will get the nod for Thursday’s game in Nashville.
“He (Osgood) is playing good ... simple,” said Babcock. “To me, he’s earned the right. Dom has another practice with Jimmy (goalie coach Jim Bedard) to get his game to where he wants and he’ll be going the next night in Nash(ville).”
That’s the cool phrase these days. “At the pole…” Not a big fan. Not a big fan at all. Not real sure I like the connotations involved with that. Also pretty sure I hate Bob Dylan. To quote Stu Nahan in Rocky II, “how this fighter of such limited ability has gained such popularity is a mystery.” Same goes for Dylan. Oh, he’s a poet. A lyrical magician who was able to express the angst of a nation a turbulent time.
Whatever. That voice makes me want to drive over a cliff. Oh, but you’re saying, Rocky references and music critiques are not the bread and butter of this foblog. Why must you? Why do we always have to sift through the crap to get to the hard-hitting hockey analsysis? The fact-based, late breaking, well-researched and equally well-considered viewpoints that cut to the very core of Red Wing hockey? Oh yeah. Well, ok.
So you may recall that I’d opted for the NHL Center Ice Online Guaranteed To Please You plan, rather than the tried and true DirecTV. No problems, until I leave town and all goes to hell.
I just received an email from The Sailor and he promises to post on Sunday. He has been without web access and is looking forward to being back home.
OK, let the comments begin!
I have some great news for all Abel 2 Yzerman supporters—Bill has finally seen the light and decided to become a Canucks fan. He just loves Luongo and couldn’t deny his true calling any longer.
It’s my hope he’ll soon be writing remarkable essays on C&B, with titles like “The Day Maltby Cried” and “Wow. How could I NOT Support a Team with Swedish Twins?” and (my personal favorite) “The Cheese in Vancouver is Much Tastier.”
P.S. All of this is a total lie, of course. Bill just wanted me to mention that he’s traveling this week so his pro-Wings rantings will be sparse. Bah.
It must have been pretty frigging cool to be 18 in the summer of 1976 and hear Boston’s “More Than a Feeling” for the first time. I’ve decided that, despite hearing it more than 1000 times, it’s the greatest rock and roll song ever made.
Speaking of which, Eric Duhatschek feels our Uncle Mike is deserving of a little more credit.
The tendency for the players is to ask, who does this (newcomer) guy think he is anyway? Sometimes, that manifests itself in a player revolt — and a revolving door in the coaching office. Instead, the Red Wings’ players bought into what Babcock was selling.
I’m guessing Eric and Andy Strickland don’t communicate frequently.
Thanks to A2Y reader W2J2 for the tip.
Hradek makes several points to back up his claim that the Wings are the best in the league…before our boy Barry jumps in to say the only thing Detroit has over Ottawa is a better uniform. Melrose also claims Ottawa has the best line in hockey.
About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: firstname.lastname@example.org
