Mistakes Cost The St. Louis Blues

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post Dispatch,

For the second time this season, the Blues lost to the worst team in the NHL _ the Los Angeles Kings. This time is was 4-3 setback in a Monday afternoon game at Staples Center.

Hardly the recipe to the get back into the playoff race.

Granted, there's not a whole lot that separates the best from the worst in the league, but the Blues have a tendency to play down to the level of their competition this season....

"Mistakes," interim coach Craig Berube said afterwards. "We made two or three mistakes that cost us and went in our net. Took too many penalties in the second period, they capitalized on one of them _ you know, 5-on-3.

"I thought we played a hard game. Competed. They competed, too. They played a good game. But we just made too many mistakes that cost us."

The Issues With The Edmonton Oilers

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

A franchise that drafted first overall four times from 2010 to 2015, and in the top five slots two other times (2014, 2016), doesn’t have the requisite skill in its lineup in 2019 to put on a show?

Those priceless draft opportunities were supposed to create another run-and-gun dynasty in Edmonton, not a mediocre team that believes scoring more than two goals on any given night is reason for a celebration.

Incredible. It’s also why firing Peter Chiarelli right now isn’t going to save the hockey season in Edmonton.

You’d get more out of NHL headquarters sending in a forensic investigation team to undercover how Edmonton’s franchise could have possibly screwed this up so badly than by firing Chiarelli at this point.

The Oilers are certainly gaining attention, for all the wrong reasons.

Can The Vancouver Canucks Attract A Big Name Free Agent Or Two?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,

The list of this summer’s potential unrestricted free agents is the most attractive in the NHL’s recent memory.

As of this writing, there are at least five elite forwards who are currently 28 and under, a secondary group of four who are 29 and under and would fit into the top six of any team in the NHL, a Norris-Trophy defenceman in Erik Karlsson, a Vezina-winning goalie in Sergei Bobrovsky, and a couple of other enticing baubles.

Now here is today’s homework assignment: Look at that list, look at the Canucks’ lineup, and factor in this organization’s history of chasing big-name UFAs. Now, try to imagine a universe where the Canucks don’t make an attempt to land at least one of those players this summer.

Given this administration’s track record with free agents, that’s a scary proposition. But this time, it actually makes sense.

This season, the locals have demonstrated they’re trending in the right direction.

Detroit’s Frustrating Power Play

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By Paul

from Dana Wakiji of the Wings website,

After going 0-for-3 in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, the Wings currently sit 25th in the league at 16.5 percent.

Although the results have mostly been the same, Wings coach Jeff Blashill sees a difference.

"I think one of the biggest things in coaching is that you fight through frustration," Blashill said. "You see things as they are. And the same can be said when you have success and sometimes it's fool's gold. You have to see things as realistic as possible and right now it's frustrating where the power play's at. I think the power play spent time where it wasn't dangerous at all, where we weren't doing a good job with our entries, where the process wasn't very good. Just like our team game, I guess.

"But lately I've felt the power play has felt way more dangerous. We've had opportunities to score. I think our entries have been good. The last power play last night wasn't good enough for sure, so we gotta make sure we get rid of any of those stinker power plays. We've gotta consistently go out there and have good power plays, and if you do that you're gonna score. We got also understand that the best power plays in the world at best score once every four times. You're not gonna score every time. You just gotta keep the process great, and I think it has been much better. If it stays like that, we'll get results. I would say the same thing with our team. The challenge is to make sure it stays like that."

Thomas Vanek also compared the power play to the overall team play.

Video- Afternoon Line- Connor McDavid

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via TSN's YouTube page,

Connor McDavid didn't shy away from the Oilers' latest struggles. He believes that Edmonton needs to renew their commitment to playing defensive hockey, and that everyone in the locker room needs to buy into turning things around. And if they don't? McDavid doesn't feel there's a place for them with the Oilers.
