Video- Coach’s Corner Tonight

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Items of discussion tonight after the fine dressed men opening included... A pass by Sidney Crosby, the play of Mark Giordano and Shea Weber.  Mark Scheifele playing big-boy hockey, can't stop watching Connor McDavid, faceoff alignments and we don't pay good money to watch the linesmen.

Hockey Talk In The Middle Of December

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

- Is New Jersey showing enough to Taylor Hall that the NHL’s reigning Hart Trophy winner will sign an extension this summer and thus alleviate fears he will flee as a 2020 free agent?

Does Hall believe enough in the club’s future to eschew hitting the open market, where he’d be welcomed with offers from multiple contenders an elite piece away?

More to the point: Is there a team whose pajamas No. 9 wore to bed as a child?...

- So wait. While we expand the playoffs to include play-in rounds featuring conference ninth- and 10th-place teams (presumably in a mini-tournament with the seventh- and eighth-place clubs), what is everyone else supposed to do? Sit around for a week?

Playoff expansion is a terrible idea, worse even than the absurd bracket format.

Saturday Notes On Hockey

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- This is how great the Tampa Bay Lightning are: They were 12-3 with Louis Domingue in goal when the great Andrei Vasilevskiy was out. Steve Yzerman may have picked a Stanley Cup season to leave his GM post with the Lightning.

- I was in the minority. I liked the trade when it happened. Call me crazy, but I still like the Shea Weber-for-P.K. Subban trade for both teams.

- The Ken Hitchcock method: Little-known Mikko Koskinen has a 7-2 record with a goals against average below 1.75 and a save percentage of .966 since the Edmonton Oilers made the coaching change at the start of Grey Cup Week. That’s what he does.

- John Carlson doesn’t get enough love for all he does for the Washington Capitals. He led all NHL defencemen in scoring last season, led last playoff season and is back in the lead again this year. And hardly anybody talks about him.

Preview Of Tonight’s Game Against The New York Islanders

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By Paul

from Brian Compton of NHL.com,

Players to watch

Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin has nine points (four goals, five assists) in a six-game point streak.

Islanders center Mathew Barzal has four assists during a three-game point streak.

They said it

"They're right there. They've still got a lot of talent, they still have a lot of guys that can put the puck in the net. It looks like they're getting some structure, they're not letting up too many goals. I haven't watched too many games with them, but they're going to be fine and they're going to be right there until the end. With or without [John Tavares], it's still a really good hockey team." -- Red Wings center Frans Nielsen

"It's big. I think we've given away points a couple of times lately. Heading on the road playing some good teams, we just need to win the game tonight." -- Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck

Status report

Neither Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill or Islanders coach Barry Trotz was willing to divulge any lineup information. … Howard, Frk and Megan participated in an optional morning skate after the Red Wings lost 4-2 to the Ottawa Senators in Detroit on Friday. … Kuhnhackl and Sbisa stayed on the ice after the Islanders morning skate, a sign they won't play. … Ho-Sang, a first-round pick (No. 28) at the 2014 NHL Draft, is expected to make his season debut.

added 2:04pm, Below, watch Frans Nielsen before the puck drops tonight.

added 2:37pm, Over 4 minutes of Blashill after the skate is below.

Afternoon Line- Kevin Paul Dupont

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

The concussions will never stop, not in a game played at this pace, on a rock-hard surface ringed by an immovable wall. But they can be reduced, by players refusing to prey on those in vulnerable positions, and telling the PA it’s time to quit supporting the guilty. Until they get to that point, they’re beating themselves over the head with their own CBA.

Be Aware Of The Trade Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,

But it's downright sane compared to what the Hockey News suggested on a podcast last week.

A trio of veteran writers went down the Patrick Kane wormhole, suggesting a deal home away from the bedraggled Blackhawks for No. 88 might be all the Sabres need to really accelerate things here.

The suggested return to Chicago for the South Buffalo native? Not much really.

Only Sam Reinhart, Jason Pominville, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Brendan Guhle, Victor Olofsson and three first-round draft picks. Yes, three. For a guy who just turned 30. No truth to the rumor the deal also includes a partridge in a pear tree. Not to mention that little problem of Kane's $10.5 million cap hit for the next four year.

It's almost as if they were acting as NBC operatives and trying to give the Blackhawks a quick fix so American television ratings can get back on track with 20 Chicago games again in upcoming years.
