Hasek and News of the Day

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from CP via Slam, Senators GM John Muckler liked what he heard from Dominik Hasek when the two talked recently. "I could hear that passion in his voice . . . He's on a mission and he wants to prove that he cam become an elite player again," Muckler said in a conference call Wednesday. "That excites me." It excited Muckler enough to exercise the Sens' one-year, $1.52-million US option on the 40-year-old goaltender.

Scheduling Quirks

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Looking over the Wings schedule, I found a couple of unique quirks. The Wings play October 22nd and October 24th in Columbus. Then they go to Chicago for a game on Oct. 27th, back to Detroit for a game against the Black Hawks on October 29th and then play in Chicago again on November 1st. I can't recall playing the same team twice in 3 days on the road or playing a team 3 times in a row. Ah, the new NHL. Any other teams have a weird schedule too?

Busiest Night Ever

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the AP via Fox Sports,

The NHL will return to the ice with the busiest night in the league's 88-year history. Not wanting fans to have to wait one extra day to see their teams, the NHL has scheduled 15 games - including all 30 clubs - on opening night Oct. 5. Before the lockout that wiped out all of last season, the record for games in a day was 14, done nine times but not since 2003.

Forsberg and Naslund a Pair

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Denver Post,

Although the Avalanche holds exclusive negotiating rights to free-agent center Peter Forsberg, Vancouver Canucks star Markus Naslund made it clear Tuesday that he wants to play on the same team as his friend. "Who wouldn't want to play with Peter?" Naslund told the Vancouver Sun. "We'll see if that could work out or not, I don't know. I think you can ask pretty much any winger in the league, and they wouldn't mind playing with him."

What about Shanny

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mlive,

Ken Holland said Shanahan's agent, Rick Curran, indicated last month that the 36-year-old left wing would take the option. Now, he might be having second thoughts. ``We've been in it long enough to know that if nothing's happened by now there's a possibility that maybe he's entertaining thoughts of not exercising it,'' Holland said. ``I would like to have Brendan back. He can do a lot of things; he's a veteran, a leader, he can score goals. ``But at the same time, he's got to want to be here. I'm not sure what's driving his thought process. I think he was very happy here. Hopefully, he wants to come back, but it's his call.''

NHL Drug Policy is Weak

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Al Stachan of the Toronto Sun,

It sounded awfully impressive when the National Hockey League announced it. It's the new and improved (fanfare) Performance Enhancing Substances Program. Its revelation was met with a sage nodding of heads and grave intonations. There were nods of assent, and assurances that the NHL is taking the lead in cracking down on substance abuse. The even deeper thinkers decreed this was a step to keep the U.S. Congress happy, as if the House of Representatives cares in the least about the NHL. In fact, this program is likely to be nothing more than a fertile battlefield for the ongoing acrimony between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association. If it does anything more than line the pockets of a few dozen lawyers and the occasional stray doctor, it will be downright astonishing. What wasn't widely noted by those making the announcement was the fact the program is limited to performance-enhancing substances.
