Looking Ahead

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Gary Thorne in his USA TODAY column wites about many hockey topics. One of particular interest to Wing fans:

One star with a new deal is Detroit's Steve Yzerman. Team officials met with him on Wednesday and left it up to Yzerman to decide if he wanted back. If not, he could have taken a job in the Red Wings front office. Yzerman chose to lace up for another year. That is good for the league and for the Wings. The landmark names are needed to get the game back on the ice.

Nashville Owner Blames Canada

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Part two of an interview Nashville owner Crag Leipold did. Part one of the interview can be found here. from the Nashville City Paper,

"All of the bad raps against us are contributed to somebody in a Canadian market," "Let's face it. Canada is still upset that Nashville has a hockey team. That's just the way it is, and we have to live with that. It (talk of contraction) was frustrating because I know where ground zero of where those rumors always started. If the sun shines, you can't have hockey. I'm a little bitter about that. I'm tired of hearing about it. "Once we have some winning seasons," Leipold continued, "and the fans stay with us like they did the first couple of years this market is going to be one of the best in the National Hockey League."

Fan Friendly League

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Al Strachan of the Toronto Sun

, One of the intentions of the GNHL - Gary's New Hockey League -- is to increase fans' insights into the game. It's an excellent idea. Fans love to see themselves as insiders, familiar with the intricacies of the personnel. They like to toss about the nicknames of prominent hockey executives -- people like Slats, Jimmy D, Riser, and so on -- and they like to hear the gossip that is going on around the league. They like to know about trades that are being explored, even if those trades never come to fruition. The National Hockey League should encourage such behaviour because it creates a bond, a feeling of intimacy, which, in turn, creates a desire on the fan's part to follow the game even more closely. The bottom line in all this is that rabid fans are good for the profit margins.

Blame it on Technology

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Sportsnet,

Sportsnet has learned that Sidney Crosby's linemate, Dany Roussin, is going back into the draft. Sources tell Sportsnet the Florida Panthers missed the signing deadline by three minutes this afternoon following a flurry of back and forth negotiations between Panthers GM Mike Keenan and Roussin's agent, Pat Brisson. The two sides had agreed on an entry level agreement just prior to the deadline and believed a fax delivered by Florida at 5pm (et) would register in Montreal in time. It didn't, and the NHL deemed the deal invalid, which leaves Roussin free to any team on Saturday.

Moving On Without Goodenow

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

In the brave new world of the National Hockey League, Bob Goodenow is yesterday's news. It was the case long before Goodenow surprised the hockey world Thursday by announcing that he was stepping aside as executive director of the players' union. The sometimes emotional news conference, attended by Goodenow and his successor Ted Saskin against a backdrop of polite praise from around the hockey world, merely confirmed the inevitable. A battle as long and ugly as the one just completed between the players and the owners does not come without causalities, and Goodenow is one.

The Diplomat

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the CP via TSN,
Ted Saskin should bring a softer, more diplomatic approach as executive director of the NHL Players' Association, replacing the edgy, abrasive and yet brilliant Bob Goodenow. It's a new era in the NHL, with the league and players needing to work together to grow the game. The NHLPA believes Saskin is the man for the job.
