Khan(!)‘s Just Blowing Stuff Up Now

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

We stopped wondering long ago what motivates our young corps of Deep Diggers.  It’s a mystery.  But I know this.  After a day of speculation and hand wringing?

Ansar Khan(!), our DD Captain, got to work.

Unfortunately, all he may have done is muddy the waters a bit.

The Islanders Are Out Of It

Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere

The last place team in the NHL is the New York Islanders.  They sport a 12-32 record (with four losses counted as regulation ties).  This puts them five points below the Atlanta Thrashers in last place.  They seem to have given up on this season - as is shown by their pathetic 2-18 record (with 2 regulation ties) since the beginning of December.  Thats right!  The New York Islanders have won only two games since the beginning of December.

Clearly they have slipped into the race for a lottery playoff spot and have little expectation to win this season.  How did this team drop this far?

It starts with questionable decisions off ice.  The fiasco when GM Neil Smith was replaced before his first Islanders game and replaced by Garth Snow, their backup goalie with no hockey managerial experience, is a very good example of such a decision.  More recently, the Islanders fired top coach Ted Nolan late enough into the off season that the top available coaches were already signed.

Time For The HHOF To Open Their Doors For Cherry

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Milbury of Blogs and Columns at CBC,

It is time to elect Don Cherry into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

There is not a man on the planet who has kept more fans or made more fans for the sport of hockey than Grapes. For nearly 30 years he has kept the attention of Canadian hockey fans (and now fans worldwide) on the sport that he and they love far more than any other.

And I’m not talking about the media wing … I am talking about full fledged induction in the builders’ category.

In my own informal poll of interested fans, administrators and media types, there is overwhelming support for Don’s election. And why not?

When It Comes To Phoenix, Forget The Relocation & Dispersal Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

With the team possibly looking at losses of nearly $30 million this season, the situation is dire. But there are still many cards to be played before this team would be relocated:

These factors are all important in determining the fate of this franchise:

• The league is not considering, and has no plans, for folding the franchise or contracting the league. There’s no secret plan for a dispersal draft of Phoenix players.

• Commissioner Gary Bettman’s history has always been that moving franchises is only the last resort. That showed most recently during the sale of the Nashville Predators and during the Pittsburgh Penguins’ negotiations for a new arena.

Hurricanes Owner Did Not Like Laviolette

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Chip Alexander of Canes Now,

While saying the decision to fire Peter Laviolette as the Hurricanes coach was made by general manager Jim Rutherford, team owner Peter Karmanos said today he approved of the move.

“I didn’t like our coach,” Karmanos said. “His public persona and his private persona were two different things.”

Who Is That Masked Avenger?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from James Mirtle of From The Rink,

I appreciate all of the solid contributions some readers have made in the right hand sidebars the past few months, but I unfortunately have had a lot of garbage posted there as well.

Lately, someone calling themselves the Masked Avenger has been repurposing their offensive blog content onto this site, material that slags other bloggers, media personalities and NHL officials. It’s all been deleted, but you can read it over on his site if you wish. (I don’t mind if people want to share content from their blog in that space, but it needs to reach a certainly level of dignity to stay there.)

The thing with SBN’s software is that it’s often easy to tell where this nonsense is coming from — and it’s even easier to get rid of. The Masked Avenger’s profile on this site gives away his identity:

continued and is anyone surprised?

Wow…That Must Have Taken A Lot Of Energy

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Look. I will never deny a bit of bitching here when Gary’s refs burn the Wings.  Are we proud of that? No. It is what it is.

But this is taking it to a whole new level.

It’s hard enough to beat the Detroit Red Wings. But when you have to beat the officials as well, it becomes a huge undertaking.

That’s Adam Brady, Director of Publications & New Media for the Anaheim Ducks and Honda Center.
