Holding Their Breath In Ottawa

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Ottawa Citizen,

It was the kind of cry that can be heard across an ocean, by the ears of a general manager resting in Florida. Ottawa Senators general manager John Muckler is no longer resting comfortably. Exactly nine minutes and 25 seconds into his 2006 Olympic hockey experience, Dominik Hasek, superstar goaltender for the Czech Republic and the Senators, felt a sharp twinge in the back of his legs after making a save on a shot by a German player. He cried out in pain, then called to nearby teammates to ice the puck. "They didn't know what I was saying," Hasek said.

Dominik Hasek's Olympic status is up in the air as the Czech goaltender had an MRI Wednesday night. Sources tell TSN that team doctors are looking at a small groin injury, and will know more about the severity of the injury over the next couple of days.

Not The Canadian Way

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Globe and Mail,

Hockey commentator Don Cherry criticized the Canadian women's hockey team Wednesday for running up the score against their weaker opponents at the Winter Olympics. “To run up a score like that, that is wrong,” said Cherry. “First of all, it is not the Canadian way.” “If you run up scores like you're running up scores now, and beating all these Europeans' teams like that and making mockery of their hosts. . . If you keep it up, you're committing suicide, they'll throw those games out.”

How Will The Media Spin This

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from ESPN,

A spokesman for the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice told ESPN.com on Wednesday that it is unlikely that additional people will be charged in connection to a gambling ring allegedly financed by Phoenix Coyotes assistant Rick Tocchet and a New Jersey state trooper. "All the names that everybody is focusing [on] that have never been officially confirmed [by law enforcement], these people are not charged," said Hagerty. "They have not committed a crime in this state. They are fact witnesses." Asked if Jones Gretzky or the others might ever be charged, Hagerty said, "It is highly unlikely. Again, they are witnesses." As such, they could be called to testify at trial, Hagerty said.

Update On Hasek

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

"It's not my groin — that's all I can say," said Hasek, who didn't want to say he was officially out of the tournament. He will have further examination Thursday. "My goal is to get back on the ice and play," Hasek said. "Let's see how I feel tomorrow. On the other hand, if I don't feel if I can help my team I don't want to be in there. I have to feel well and be able to practice hard. If I can't do that, I'm not going to play." Hasek said he "felt a very sharp pain" after making a save.

No Need To Apologize

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the AP via MSNBC,

So far they haven’t learned much about skating, stick handling or scoring. But the rest of the world may take one lesson away from the women’s Olympic hockey, er, tournament. There’s no apologizing in women’s hockey. Not when it really matters. Not even when it’s somewhat deserved.

Italians Enjoy The Moment

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

If you believe that the soul of the Olympics is about more than winning and losing, that it's also about creating a treasure trove of memories even in the face of incredible odds, then Wednesday's Canada-Italy hockey game was for you. Was the entirely predictable 7-2 Canadian victory a thing of beauty? Hardly.

Rating The Rookie Goalies

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from TSN,

Rookies have been making a name for themselves throughout the NHL this season and it's just as true between the pipes, where high draft picks and mid-round picks, from all sorts of backgrounds -- Canadian junior, U.S. College, Sweden and, of course, Finland -- have emerged as goaltending solutions for their various teams.
