Official- Rob Blake Talks About NTC

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the CP via TSN,

Reports surfaced over the weekend that he had agreed to waive his no-trade clause. But the 37-year-old star defenceman said nothing could be further from the truth. He cemented his future with the Kings after a pair of meetings with GM Dean Lombardi over the weekend.
“Dean and I simply talked about the future of our team, the same thing we did last July when I signed,” Blake told The Canadian Press on Monday. “Nothing really has changed. I don’t know where all that stuff (inaccurate reports) had come from.”

from the CP via TSN,

The Oilers talked with Toronto-based agent Don Meehan again Monday about a new multiyear contract for the veteran left-winger, who is believed to be seeking at least US$5 million a season over a five-year term.
“We’re still talking,” Howson said. “Everything has been very cordial and open.
“We’re continuing to have what we consider productive talks. We’re hopeful we’re going to come to an agreement and get a contract done, but there’s nothing to report as of now.”

Talking Todd

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

Bertuzzi is the sort of player who might change teams five minutes before the deadline, if a club that came up short on one trade front decides on him as a fallback position. The other issue – which cannot be trivialized – is his salary-cap hit. Since Bertuzzzi earns $5.269 million per season, even the pro-rated value of his contract would require a team to have about $1.1 million in salary-cap space in order to fit him into their payroll.

Tweaker’s Delight

Blog: KK Hockey By George Malik

The Ottawa Senators players were given a vote of confidence today when general manager John Muckler announced that he had no intention of trading away any of the current roster players before tomorrow’s NHL trade deadline at 3 p.m.
“Our objective here is to keep this team together, and I think it’s been that way since I came here,” Muckler said after practice today at Scotiabank Place. “I felt this was a good hockey club going into Day 1 of training camp. We’ve improved, and the coaching staff has done a good job in putting the pieces together. We’re going to try and do things to make it better but if we can’t do anything, I have all the confidence in the world with the players in the dressing room. I think they can put it all together.”

Messier’s Jersey Retirement—Curious Timing

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Eric Duhatschek at the Globe & Mail,

The Oilers wanted to do it when the Phoenix Coyotes were in the house, so that two of Messier’s ex-teammates, Wayne Gretzky and Grant Fuhr, both of whom coach for Phoenix, could be in attendance for the ceremony. The Coyotes make only two appearances in Edmonton this season and the first came early – back on Oct. 23 – and the Oilers didn’t want to schedule it then.
So the Messier ceremony - which will honour the first decade of his career, in which he was a rambunctious, sometimes out-of-control physical force on behalf of the Oilers - could be overshadowed by whatever news happens to break out in the hours leading up to the deadline.

So Far Today…

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Pierre Lebrun of the CP via the Globe and Mail,

While veteran Florida winger Gary Roberts contemplated whether or not to approve a trade to Pittsburgh on Monday other clubs flooded the NHL waiver wire.
Roberts, an unrestricted free agent July 1, was trying to decide if he should waive his no-trade clause for a move to the Penguins, a source told The Canadian Press.
Roberts, 40, could still turn down the Pittsburgh deal and ask the Panthers to re-visit talks with other clubs, notably the two teams he really wants to move to: Ottawa and Toronto.
Meanwhile, veteran defenceman Bryan Berard of the Columbus Blue Jackets was among nine players put on waivers on the eve of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. ET trading deadline.
