Sports Marketing Double-Take

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Darren Rovell at CNBC’s SportsBiz:

imageA blog reader writes in today to tell us how similar the “NHL Face Off 2008” logo was to this year’s “NFL Kickoff 2008” logo.

It’s kind of ridiculous how similar they look. Have we really run out of logos? I know no idea is really original, but I hope the person who put this one together at the NHL didn’t get any sort of credit for it.

Rovell is apparently suggesting the NHL’s work is a knock-off of the NFL’s earlier logo. I’ll leave it to readers to decide, but he might have a point…

Where Is Stamkos

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Lightning Strikes,

Seems Steven Stamkos, the No. 1 overall pick, is averaging just 9:47 of ice time. That was 41st among rookies heading into Tuesday’s games. Saturday against the Hurricanes, he played just 6:05….

“It’s got to be a conscious effort on my part,” Melrose said about finding Stamkos some ice time. “You want to get him in the lineup. You want to put him in situations where he will succeed. We have to get him more than six minutes.”

Back In Denver

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from John Buccigross of ESPN,

Al Pacino told me to never be a name-dropper, but I would return to Denver in 2002 and 2003 to host Joe Sakic’s charity golf tournament, and in 2004 to play in Peter Forsberg’s charity golf event. Then the lockout hit, and all of our worlds changed forever. It hasn’t been the same since. I hadn’t been back to Denver until Thursday.

Of course, the reason I was returning to Denver was hockey-related. I was hosting the 2008 United States Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. And what a class it was: Brett Hull, Brian Leetch, Mike Richter and Cammi Granato. Granato was the first woman to be inducted into the U.S. Hall.

Sometimes An Honest Captain Doesn’t Work

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Rich Chere at NJ.com,

“It was a tremendous honor because my personality doesn’t necessarily fit to that position,” (Bobby) Holik said. “It didn’t change me. It’s something I value very highly as far as my career goes, but as the season went on I realized I’m not captain material because sometimes you have to be more politically correct or get along with people. Or not be too honest, because I feel you have to kind of keep the peace.

“I guess I’m just too blunt about some things. Or too honest. You’d think that would be a strength or a good thing about a captain, but not the way I am, I guess, sometimes. At least I don’t think it worked out that well there.”

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Tarik El-Bashir of Capitals Insider,

Viktor Kozlov could miss two weeks with an undisclosed left leg injury, General Manager George McPhee said moments again. Kozlov appeared to injure his knee when he was hit along the boards by Rob Davison in the second period of last night’s 5-1 win over Vancouver.

“We suspect it will be a couple of weeks,” McPhee said. “But we’ll know more in a couple of weeks.”
