Flames Fans Looking For A Victory

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Calgary Sun,

After the Flames were handed a 3-1 loss today during the second game in series against the Detroit Red Wings, fans who hit the town to watch the contest at Calgary watering holes described their team’s performance as anywhere from disappointing to shameful.
“It’s very disappointing,” said fan Andrew Potocki.
Potocki said he hopes the Flame’s outstanding home record will lead to wins when the series moves to Calgary but he fears his team is too far behind to mount a viable come-back.
“If we don’t pull off game three on Tuesday, we might as well just pack it in,” he said.

Patrick Eaves Knocked Out

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Colby Armstrong of the Pens laid into the Sens Patrick Eaves.  No penalty, no elbow, just one of those very hard hits.
Eaves probably had a quick second to see the hit coming, but could do nothing about it.
Eaves was taken off on a stretcher, and appeared to be coming to.

added 7:52pm, from the CP via TSN,

Eaves was circling the Pittsburgh net midway through the second period when he took a stiff check to the head from Penguins forward Colby Armstrong, knocking him hard to the ice. While Eaves lay prone, Senators forward Dean McAmmond fought with Penguins forward Maxime Talbot.
Eaves was alert, and was shown speaking to doctors and flexing his hands as he was wheeled off the ice. CBC reported Eaves had movement in all his extremities, and was diagnosed with a concussion.

OK, some of us heard the booing during the Canadien National Anthem on CBC.
No need for that, learn from previous experiences we have had with this.

Wang Looking Good

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Chris Russell of the Sporting News,

Wang has been bludgeoned by media pundits and fans across the NHL landscape for being clueless and out of touch with reality. Amongst the charges, hiring Nolan, hiring Garth Snow after firing Smith who was on the job for about four minutes. Or how about the bashing that Wang took after signing star goaltender Rick DiPietro to a high risk, high reward, 15-year contract that ultimately will prove to be a steal.
I don’t know about you, but I’d say so far Wang has come out of this smelling like roses. One year of making the playoffs does not reverse everything, but it does buy you momentum. It buys you hope. It buys you a lot of smiles and the feeling that it is only going to get better from here.

Yashin’s Back…

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

Alexei Yashin is in a familiar position at playoff time — nailed to the bench….
Nolan busted Yashin, 33, down to centre on the fourth line halfway through the first period of the Eastern Conference quarter-final game. Yashin played between Richard Park and Andy Hilbert, while Richard Zednik was promoted to Yashin’s spot with centre Viktor Kozlov and right winger Miroslav Satan. Yashin barely got off the bench in the third period.

Wings Fans- Don’t Get Giddy

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

The Wings are finally playing playoff type hockey, but remember, it isn’t a series until a road team wins.
This series is not over by any means, we will see a different Calgary team at home on Tuesday.

Time To Crackdown

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from TBM at NBC Sports,

Things have changed in the NHL, but not that much. Last year, Edmonton’s Raffi Torres unloaded a brutal elbow on San Jose’s Milan Michalek, knocking him out of two games.
Incredibly, Torres was not suspended.
There is a genuine fear among players that with the stakes so high, the risk of severe injury has never been greater. And the only way to curb it is to make sure that the players understand that serious offences will carry serious consequences.
The players have the guts to do what it takes in the playoffs.
Does the NHL?

GMs Must Make The Right Moves

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

“With this new system, you’ve got to spend your money right and you’ve got make the playoffs or you’re going to be in trouble,” a league executive said last week. “You’re going to see more GMs paying the price. (Barnett’s firing) might be the start of a trend.
“In the past, if things didn’t go right for your team, you’d just go out and spend more cash. Now, GMs are having their mistakes exposed. (If) they don’t spend the cash the right way, they’re going to hear about it or get fired like Barnett did. That’s the thing with the salary cap: There’s nowhere for GMs to hide.”

Ice: Advantage Wild

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the OC Register,

But the Ducks’ checkers kept the Wild’s best line under control for most of the 2-1 and 3-2 victories. They won’t get a clear shot at the Wild-and-crazy Slovaks here.
The other advantage is the ice itself, a chronic problem no matter how low they turn the thermostat in Anaheim. Wild players, for some reason, didn’t seem comfortable on tapioca.
The ice is much kinder to the Wild in their gorgeous arena, the closest thing the NHL has to the Indiana Pacers’ fieldhouse when it comes to making the new look old again.

Islanders Show Up

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

Let’s be honest, the Islanders have no business staying with them in this series. Anyone can break down the categories, examine the matchups from every conceivable angle and draw the same conclusion.
Ruff has more than three times as many playoff victories as Nolan has playoff games coached. Ruff is better at making adjustments on the fly. He junked his lines in the second period, shipping listless Ales Kotalik to the fourth line and giving Stafford time with Drury and Dainius Zubrus.
The difference Saturday night was Nolan’s players showed up. The Sabres were absent just long enough for one to slip away. In the playoffs, that’s all it takes.
