Prospal Signing Official

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Vinny Prospal.

“Vinny is a highly-skilled player with good offensive instincts and the ability to play on the wing or at the center position,” stated Sather.  “We think he will give us added flexibility and brings a veteran presence to our lineup.”

Keith Acton Surprised By Lottery Winnings

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via YorkRegion,

Maybe it’s an omen of a lucky season ahead.

Keith Acton, an assistant coach with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and co-owner of Stouffville’s Boston Pizza, came into a lucky windfall last week after taking home $98,500 in the Aug. 5. Lotto 6/49 draw.

Mr. Acton, a former NHL player, said he had to check his ticket a few times.

“I didn’t believe I won at first,” he told lottery officials.

Jimmy D On Record?

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

So it looks like the team Mouth actually did roar to the Toronto media at the Fan 590.  Thanks to A2Y reader PRS.  And if you are opposed to the Wings bringing Todd Bertuzzi back?  Stand by for the 13:57 mark.

Devellano on Bertuzzi returning to Wings.

Might be time to start tinkering with lines, ladies and gentlemen.

“It’s been a tough year (the off-season). But we’ve signed Williams and I believe we’re getting close with Bertuzzi, a one year-contract, hopefully next week.”

Creditors Want Answers From Hicks/NHL

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Daniel Kaplan of the Dallas Business Journal,

The more than three dozen creditors of Hicks Sports Group, the owner of the Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers that defaulted on its debt in March, sent a letter to the NHL four weeks ago asking the league how it planned to help address their concerns, according to financial sources, but there has been no response.

At the same time, HSG owner Tom Hicks has suggested that he believes he can hold onto the Stars despite the default through August 2010, which is far later than the October deadline the creditors assumed existed for resolution of debt crisis, the sources said.

A process to sell the MLB Rangers is under way, but no such activities are believed to be occurring around the Stars. The situation could shape up as a major battle between the creditors on one side and the NHL and Hicks on the other.

Finding A Leader In Toronto

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Damian Cox of the Spin at theToronto Star,

Tomas Kaberle may be coming back to at least start the season with the Maple Leafs, but despite speculation in some corners, it won’t be to become the next Leaf captain.

Ditto for newcomers Mike Komisarek and Francois Beauchemin. In fact, GM Brian Burke is setting the bar awfully high in terms of finding the player who will next wear the “C” in Toronto, making it a virtual certainty the club will again not have a captain this season.

“Look, we’re Big Blue,” he said yesterday. “We’re not naming a captain until we have someone who can rank with the captains that have come before.”

Predators Can Define Their Direction

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Rocky Bonanno of NHL.com,

Where are the Nashville Predators headed? After 10 seasons of play, the question is legitimate and needs to be answered.

Nashville is not exactly a pushover, but neither is it a team anyone fears playing. The Sommet Center is not a hostile environment for visiting teams, the Predators have yet to win a playoff series, and their string of four straight seasons in the postseason was snapped in 2008-09.

Is that the genesis for a shakeup? Is the team really headed in the right direction? Rather than run off a string of wholesale changes, Nashville management feels it has the personnel internally to get back on track.

The Most Protected Player In The NHL

Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere

When we look at the top 20 offensive zone starters, we see that Ed Jovanovski leads the league.  He has a significant lead on anyone else in the league.  Jovanovski has 168 more offensive zone starts than defensive zone starts.  Patrick Kane of Chicago is in second place well back at 139.  This is an amazing total given that Phoenix had the worst team Corsi Number  in the league last season and had many more defensive faceoffs than offensive faceoffs to take last year.

Given that Jovanovski is the highest paid player on the Coyotes with a $6.5 million salary cap, this isn’t good enough.  He should be the player who leads the team and does the hard work to make the team win.  In Phoenix, it is Zbynek Michalek and Kurt Sauer who play the tough roles.  They are on for the most defensive zone starts in Phoenix.

Sunday Ditties

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

My peers have picked up the slack this summer.  As I’ve embarked on our own A2Y crusade (you know what it is, and how well it’s worked), Wing bloggers old and new have not stopped.  This weekend is no exception.  I’d like to give you some examples on this fine Sunday morning, just two days before a Tuesday that will be looked back on as just one of the 43 remaining until the Cup returns to a team that will actually earn it.  Right Gary?

Ready?  Awesome.

Here we go.

Roenick Talks Chicago

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bob Verdi of the Chicago Tribune,

Jeremy Roenick has numerous options for what to do with the rest of his life, including stage, screen and television. But he will clear a busy schedule for one particular job title, should it be offered.

“I began my career with the Blackhawks and should have ended it with the Blackhawks,” he was saying the other day from his home near Phoenix. “And there should have been no in between the Blackhawks. I should never have left. I didn’t want to leave. I loved Chicago and felt loved in Chicago.

“Anyway, I’ve seen what they’ve done for some retired guys like me. Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito, Denis Savard. They’re ambassadors for the club. I could go for that. As long as we’re at it, it would be cool if they retired my number, 27, too. I would be honored.”
