Veteran left wing Gary Roberts has waived his no-trade clause so the Florida Panthers can deal him to the Pittsburgh Penguins, his agent said Tuesday.
“He waived the no-trade portion of his contract, he waived that last night,” agent Richard Curran told The Associated Press from his home in Devon, Pa. “I would expect there would be an announcement later this morning about a transaction between Pittsburgh and Florida.”

Projecting Sidney

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Alan Ryder of the Globe and Mail,

How good is Sidney? How good could he become? How does he compare with Wayne Gretzky, his landlord (Mario Lemieux), Steve Yzerman and the game’s other superstars? The best way to answer that question is to find a group of similar players and study their performance over time.
To properly conduct that analysis it is necessary to pay attention to three large factors — age of entry into the NHL, experience and playing time. There is a huge difference between the careers of players who are prominent in the NHL in their teens and those who attain prominence at a later age.

Chicago At The Deadline

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Daily Herald,

Perhaps the Hawks’ biggest asset on defense is Brent Seabrook, whose name continues to pop up in trade rumors with Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers.
“We’re getting calls, but we’re not shopping him,” Tallon said. “It would have to be something that knocked our socks off.”
Tallon was trying to deal defensemen Adrian Aucoin and Jassen Cullimore, but their contract situations were making it difficult. Aucoin is signed for two more years for $8 million, while Cullimore is owed $1.9 million for next year.
While it seemed for the last few weeks that the Hawks were showcasing backup goaltender Patrick Lalime for a possible trade, coach Denis Savard said Monday that Lalime was staying.

Caps Won’t Dither With Dainus

Blog: KK Hockey By George Malik

from the Washington Post:

Zubrus’s agent, Jerrold Colton, said he was in contact with the Capitals yesterday, but the sides remain apart on an extension. The sticking point, as has been previously reported, is the length of contract the Capitals are offering Zubrus, who wants a long-term pact.
“There have been discussions, but we are not there yet,” Colton said. “And there’s not a whole lot of time to do so. There’s been progress, but not enough to get a deal done. We’re certainly hopeful that we can make a deal, but it has to be the right deal.”
McPhee said: “We would like to sign a deal. But it had to be a good hockey decision. If the numbers are right, and it makes sense to the hockey department, then ownership will provide the money. But we’re not there yet.”

Wings Still In The Guerin Hunt - Z Out Tonight

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Ansar Khan at Mlive,

But, the Wings surely aren’t done. They’ll still in the hunt for Bill Guerin of St. Louis; the only question is, are they prepared to pay the steep price in draft picks and, possibly, a decent prospect? They believe the price for Guerin will go down by Tuesday’s 3 p.m. deadline because the Blues have to either sign him or trade him or risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season….
Also, Henrik Zetterberg won’t play Tuesday in Chicago because of back spasms. He’s listed as day-to-day and the Wings believe he’ll play Friday at home vs. the Blackhawks. The Wings recalled Matt Hussey from Grand Rapids for Tuesday’s game.

Not Like It Once Was

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Rocky Mountain News,

General manager Francois Giguere is more likely looking to acquire prospects and draft picks instead of a veteran rental with the Avalanche sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference.
It’s quite a different scenario from when former general manager Pierre La-croix, now team president, made a habit of acquiring marquee players when the club was loading up for annual runs at the Stanley Cup.
Ray Bourque, Rob Blake, Theo Fleury, Dave Andreychuk and Darius Kasparaitis were among those brought to Colorado in late-season deals, as was Jose Theodore last year in exchange for David Aebischer.

Big & Mean

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Contra Costa Times,

Sharks coach Ron Wilson said he doesn’t know a lot about his newest player, defenseman Craig Rivet. But he does know this.
“He’s big. He’s mean,” Wilson said before Monday night’s 3-2 loss to the first-place Anaheim Ducks. “He’ll add some stiffness and backbone to our defense.”
Who knows definitively whether the Sharks made a good, bad or middling trade Sunday when they acquired Rivet from the Montreal Canadiens for Josh Gorges and a first-round draft pick?
But you’ve got to like general manager Doug “The-man-who-traded-for-Joe-Thornton” Wilson’s track record.

The Day Is Here

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the New York Times,

The National Hockey League trading deadline was made two weeks earlier last season, and team executives, no strangers to telephones, were not bashful about swinging deals. They completed a league-record 25 trades on an entertaining deadline day.
Lou Lamoriello, the president and general manager of the Devils, does not like to make predictions, but he said last night that the moments before this year’s deadline, at 3 p.m. Eastern today, could feature as many transactions as last season, if not more.
“Every indication is that there will be substantial movement at the last minute,” Lamoriello said in a telephone interview.

Get ready folks- Have you taken the day off from work or school to catch the action or will you be watching the NHL Network via streaming on NHL.com?
At times the updates on KK may be coming in fast and furious.  They also may come in a little “raw”, with details soon to follow.
So grab your coffee, sit back, relax and enjoy the day.
