Bad Karma

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News,

Red Wings brass is pretty infallible, but should GM Ken Holland and friends not have learned the first time around? That would be in 2007, when Detroit picked up Bertuzzi for a Stanley Cup run that ended prematurely in the Western Conference final with a series loss to the eventual champion Anaheim Ducks. That would be the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Red Wings (shared with Buffalo), who had home-ice advantage in the series and would win the Cup the following season – once Bertuzzi was gone.

Though I wish Big Bert no specific ill will, recent history has shown that everything the man touches turns to ash. His trade from Vancouver to Florida was an unmitigated disaster for the Panthers, who lost Roberto Luongo in the deal and sloughed Bertuzzi off on Detroit after just seven games of service (karma-wise, injuries have followed the power forward around like buzzards in recent years).

A Book On ‘Gabby’

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from J.P. of Japers’ Rink,

Every day this week at Japers’ Rink, we’ll be sharing a new excerpt from Bruce Boudreau’s forthcoming autobiography “Gabby - Confessions of a Hockey Lifer” (co-written by Tim Leone). The book, published by the good folks over at Potomac Books, Inc., hits book store shelves in October, 2009…

Today’s excerpt nee

Starting an AHL expansion franchise in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 2001–2 was exciting. But that challenge was tempered by a tragic dose of perspective on September 11, 2001.

I was supposed to be on United Airlines flight 175 out of Boston, which flew into the World Trade Center in New York. Los Angeles Kings pro scouting director Ace Bailey and scout Mark Bavis were on the flight and were killed. Ace and I became fast friends when I coached in Lowell.

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with center Stephane Yelle on a one-year, $550,000 contract.

“Stephane is a proven winner,” said Rutherford. “He adds depth and experience to the Hurricanes at the center position, and he will contribute to the penalty kill.”

They Love The Game

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mary Ann Maskery at LAKings.com,

They call their team the California Condors - young people with special needs who play every Sunday afternoon at the Valley Ice Center in Panorama City.

The group accepts special needs ranging from autism to mental retardation, seizures and cerebral palsy. The team includes boys and girls and players of every level, even those who have never skated before. They learn to skate very quickly. And they love the game.

As one mother describes it, “They love the high fives, the camaraderie, the teamwork, and, of course, the incredible thrill of getting the puck in the net.”

Shameless Plug

Blog: KK Members Blog By detroitdan1982

Hi all. While not trying to take people’s attention away from KuklasKorner (which is probably my favourite site on the internet), I just wanted to let you know that I am a contributor at SportsAgentBlog.com. I write hockey related articles, although I have strayed into other areas from time to time. My latest article was posted today and deals with the insurance issues at Olympic orientation camps.

The link to the website is http://www.sportsagentblog.com and my archive of stories is located here http://www.sportsagentblog.com/author/dfurey/

.

I work in the legal world in Newfoundland and it is my dream to some day, some how, work for an NHL team. I’m just trying to make connections any way I can. Enjoy the articles and I appreciate any feedback. Thanks very much!

The Under 22 Team

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from John Kreiser of NHL.com,

Hockey is a kids’ game - even at the NHL level, where a lot of those kids are making an impact at a very young age.

With today’s speed-oriented game, teams are more willing than ever to give their draft picks a chance at a younger age. That has led to a plethora of players 21 and under who’ve made an impact in their short time in the League.

Here’s a look at the NHL’s best players who don’t turn 22 until 2010 and have played at least 40 games (except where noted)—meaning that no 2009 draft picks are included.

Pierre McGuire Talks Team Canada

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Rachel Brady of CTV Olympics,

What are the key things you will be watching for at camp?

1. The type of system Mike Babcock wants to put in place for this staff. That’s a major reason why this camp takes place, so the players understand the mindset and the philosophy the coaching staff, because you don’t have a lot of prep time going into the Olympics.

2. How the younger players respond to the pressure of being in a camp like this with more established players. I’ll use Sidney Crosby as an example - he’ll be a focal point player. How does he respond to the challenge? I think he’ll do very well, but it will be so interesting to see him in that environment.

THN Ranks San Jose #1 In The West

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from The Hockey News,

The defending Presidents’ Trophy winners, despite their inability to cash in in the playoffs, are a good bet to repeat as regular season champs after a summer of little roster turnover. Look for sophomore bench boss Todd McLellan to have his troops better prepared for the stretch run, where they struggled badly in 2008-09.

Player Agent Recalls Draft Day Excitement

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Ryan Pyette of the London Free Press,

The NHL draft-day drama remains so fresh.

London hockey agent Brian MacDonald of Siskinds Sports Management was sitting alongside his Knights client Nazem Kadri’s sizable clan at Montreal’s Bell Centre in June.

Suddenly, Ottawa Senators GM Bryan whipped past toward the Toronto Maple Leafs table, obviously to try to swing a last-minute deal with Buds boss Brian Burke.

“That was exciting,” MacDonald said, reflecting on the first round nail-biter. “We knew the Leafs were really high on Nazem so we were waiting to see which way it went (with Toronto and the seventh pick) and it always takes two sides to make a deal.”

And, often, a lot of ups and downs along the way.

Random Offseason Musings from a Hippy on Beer Fumes, August 19th, 2009

Blog: KK Members Blog By Hippy Dave

So I just finished brewing my first batch of beer, and let me tell you, I think it’ll be a good one.  A pale ale.  Also let me tell you, don’t keep your head above the kettle for most of the boil, I think there are some intoxicating fumes in there.  I wanted to keep these offseason musings for next month but after huffing wort for a couple hours they just wouldn’t wait:

- I believe one of the most under-reported events of this offseason was the retirement of Jeremy Roenik.  It’s really too bad JR never won a cup.  Say what you will, but I think this guy was a dynamo of personality that this league sorely will miss, and certainly needs more of.  Now if only Sean Avery could class up like he did, the league would have a new spokesman.  Maybe if he can’t do it Ray Emery can.

- The other unsung quiet retirement of the year, I can’t freaking believe nobody’s covered this: Darren McCarty.  Sure, it’s not “announced,” but, c’mon, am I the only one who’s really sad about Mac sliding darkly into that quiet night?  We love you, Mac.  The Wings need another Darren McCarty, but they’ll never have one again.

- Speaking of fighters, I was pouring through one of my favorite sites and came upon this thread: Who are the top 10 fighters of all time?  I’m sure you all have your opinions.

- Also speaking of “fighters”: Patrick Kane and his brother deserve some jailtime.  I’m sorry, but if any of us regular readers violently assaulted a person, we’d get it.  I’m freaking tired of celebrities getting special treatment and he’s no exception.  Screw being young, the law shouldn’t descriminate based on age in adulthood.  Besides, he’s about to make a bunch of money off the endeavor based on the new NHL ‘09/Grand Theft Auto bundle pack:

- Ok, the Sabres signed Grier.  If you had to choose between Maltby, Williams, Bertuzzi, or him, which would you choose?  *cough*

- Lidstrom’s in the last year of his contract.  At 39, how many years do you think he’s got left?  I’m guessing quite a few.  At least 4.  He’ll give Cheli a run for his money.

- For Corsi’s Sake, we get it already.  I’ll leave it at that.

- Summer, what summer?  IIHF Style.

- And finally, the top 10 most bizarre hockey incedents of all time.

I’m beginning to think drinking beer is so old-school, from here on out I’m munching the barley and hops directly, and chasing it with the yeast and boiling water and letting it all ferment in my liver.

Mahalo,
- The Hippy
