Will Zetterberg & Bertuzzi Click?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Zetterberg, who was dealing with a tender groin during training camp, will make his exhibition debut tonight against the Rangers at Joe Louis Arena centering newcomer Todd Bertuzzi (6-3, 240) and Dan Cleary (6-0, 210).

“It’s going to be fun to play with Bert,” Zetterberg said Thursday. “He’s a great player. I’ve played against him many times, and he’s strong with the puck and is really skilled and a big guy. Most of the time with Todd, when he gets the opportunity he puts it away.”

Zetterberg has an excellent shot of his own, which he goes to regularly when he’s playing with Datsyuk. With two terrific finishers on the ice with him, Zetterberg is apt to look to pass more. “Now I’ll probably be the setup guy a little bit more,” he said. “That’s what happened last year when I didn’t play with Pav as much.”

The Chances Of Kessel To Nashville Are Slim

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

I don’t doubt the Nashville Predators have significant interest in Boston Bruins’ restricted free agent Phil Kessel.

And I don’t doubt, all things being equal, Boston would rather move Kessel to Nashville and the Western Conference than to the division rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

But here’s why Nashville, regardless of what it offers Boston, is at a serious disadvantage in the Kessel sweepstakes.

Kessel, it appears, wants to play in Toronto, not Nashville. And as long as that remains the case, Nashville can’t trade for him.

Wild Sellout Streak In Danger

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

The NHL’s longest active sellout streak is in danger of ending.

The Wild has sold out all 365 home games in franchise history, including the preseason and postseason, but as the Wild opens the preseason tonight against Columbus, there are tickets available for every game this season.

“We have struggled to renew season tickets in the same way we always do, which is 95 percent plus,” Wild Chief Operating Officer Matt Majka said.

Scoring An Issue For Senators

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

It’s not a problem ... yet.

But the fact the Senators are still looking for their first even-strength goal and their first goal from a forward and have scored just two goals in two pre-season games has become a topic of conversation in the Senators camp.

As Senators coach Cory Clouston put it Thursday, it’s not “a worry, but it is an issue.”

The Penguins Plan To Repeat

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun,

After the bubbly had fizzled, the beer had been guzzled and the parade was complete, Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma had a task for his staff.

In the short summer break for the upstart Stanley Cup champs, there was a homework assignment to be completed before training camp began this past weekend.

“It’s always a challenge, ask any Stanley Cup winner and I guarantee you they will talk about the short summer or the complacency level, there’s always something,” Pens assistant general manager and former Maple Leaf, Tom Fitzgerald, said yesterday, when asked about the tricky business of returning to work wearing the champion’s belt .

“It was part of a project from Dan, to come back as coaches after picking the brains of other Stanley Cup winners. Whether it was players or coaches or assistants, he wanted us to see what they might do different the first year after winning. You always want to figure out how you can get back that edge and keep the advantage.”

The Return Of Theo Fleury

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun,

With his usual flair for the dramatic, Fleury scored the lone shootout goal in Calgary’s 5-4 pre-season victory over the New York Islanders last night, exactly what the Saddledome faithful wanted.

“When I was told to go out,” Fleury responded when asked what went through his mind, “I was thinking I’d better score here.”

He did.

Fleury didn’t have a whole lot of impact over the first 65 minutes, but that didn’t matter in the end.

Dubinsky’s Agent Takes A Shot At The Rangers

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Entering the seventh day of the negotiating stalemate that has kept unsigned free agent Brandon Dubinsky out of training camp, the Rangers’ projected first-line center has reduced his asking price, The Post has learned.

“Of the three proposals on the table, we’ve altered the two- and one-year proposals that we believe are reasonable given the marketplace and the Rangers’ payroll,” Kurt Overhardt, Dubinsky’s agent, told The Post by phone late yesterday afternoon. “I think it’s unfortunate that Rangers’ management is treating this as a sum-zero game with this player.

“It doesn’t make sense.”

Okposo Was Defenseless On Phaneuf Hit

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Katie Strang of Isles Files at Newsday,

Thankfully Kyle Okposo is OK. He has a mild concussion and was cleared by doctors to fly back with the team on the charter to Saskatoon.

Okposo was the victim of a vicious open-ice hit from Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf. I’ve watched the replay several times, and if I were Okposo or his teammate I would not be happy. Phaneuf left his feet on impact, catching Okposo with a shoulder to the head as Okposo was looking down, rendering him completely defenseless.

added 8:10am, from Scott Cruickshank of Flames Insider at the Calgary Herald,

If you crumple a player with a clean check, are you on the hook to accept the first challenge that comes your way?

Is that part of the code? Hit big, then get ready to scrap all comers?
